Hakobyan, Korchmar Take Home July Titled Tuesday
This month's Titled Tuesday was very strong, with many strong players. Next week, there will be another Titled Tuesday that is also a qualifier to the Speed Chess Championship. Not all of the favorites succeeded in Round 1, as one might expect. Here is an example:
The upsets continued as Vladimir Fedoseev (chess.com: Bigfish1995) blundered his rook (likely a mouseslip) against lower rated opposition to lose his second game.
Aram Hakobyan (chess.com: mukhin1) won three nice games in Rounds 2, 3, and 5 on his way to a 5/5 score.
Hakobyan and Conrad Holt (chess.com: dretch) had perfect scores after five rounds, but a quick draw in Round 6 allowed Andrew Tang (
chess.com: penguingm1), the Bullet Royal Arena Kings Champion, to catch up. Here is one of Tang's wins:
In Round 6, Tang would vault into shared first with a win. He did so in a nice way.
Holt lost to Shant Sargsyan (chess.com: Shant_Sargysan) in Round 7, so now the winner of Tang vs. Hakobyan would be the sole leader.
Hakobyan was the leader, but there were a lot of players on his heels, including Africa's first 2700 Bassem Amin (chess.com: Dr-Bassem). Amin won the following game, among others.
However, Amin lost to Vasiliy Korchmar (chess.com: Korchmar_Vasiliy), a loss that he wasn't able to bounce back from and he finished in a respectable 18th place.
Another player who impressed towards the end was Teodora Injac (chess.com: arctic_t00), winning this amazing game.
However, only Korchmar was able to catch up with Hakobyan, who won the following game and made two draws to finish the tournament with a 8.5/10 score.
