Douglas Thigpen vs. Jeffrey Serna January, 2009 1) e4 b6 2) d4 Bb7 3) Nc3 e6 4) Nf3 d5 5) Bd3 dxe4 6) Nxe4 Nd7 7) 0-0 c5?! c5 is not the best move, but why is that so? What disadvantages does Black have in his position? What should Black do instead? What should White do to take advantage of c5? 8) dxc5 Nxc5 9) Bb5+ Nd7 Black’s knight is pinned. How should White best exploit this? 10) Ne5! Bxe4 11) Bxd7+ Ke7 Black’s position is on the verge of collapse. What’s the fastest way to finish Black off? Think carefully, I’ve shown this position to experts who couldn’t solve it. Identify each weakness in Black’s camp (including vulnerable pieces) and find a solution that targets each weakness. 12) Qd4! If you found this move without peeking you’re doing very well indeed. This is a 2000+ tactical strength move to find. White centralizes the queen so she attacks as many targets as possible, including the undefended e4-bishop. However, if Black saves the bishop… 12) … Bb7 Find White to play, mate in 2. 13) Bg5+ f6 If Nf6 it is the same result by the same move. 14) Qb4# 1-0

These are all mate in one puzzles with white to move, it will help sharpen your recognition of patterns. The pieces can be moved.

Drag the pieces to solve for checkmate, some are winning material or playing for a draw. Try to learn the theme of the pattern and name. The color at the bottom of the board is to move.

Elonzo wanted to analyze this game but he didn't notate so he asked me to post it. Before the tournament started, I was joking that i was going to be playing in his section and I would play him the first round as white and exactly that happened because he got moved up into my section. I got first place in that tournament and Elonzo got second, his only loss was against me but he could've won. Elonzo saw bishop takes on f2 but didn't play it because he thought that i would be better afterwards. He didn't realize how good that move was until after he played knight to e7. This game is a good example why you should play the board, not the man.
