Paul Morphy was one of those players who marked an era in chess, who was far superior to his contemporaries, and luckily he had the opportunity to prove it. Unfortunately he later retired at a very young age. He must have been the first child prodigy in the history of chess. This is a tournament in his honor and to watch his games, where he used to dominate his rivals with surprising ease... The Italian Opening is one of the oldest and was widely played during the Romantic era of chess, in the 18th and 19th centuries. The best in the world also play it a lot today, and the ideas have been renewed. We are going to play a themed tournament to practice it with both colors and to compete. It is ideal for king pawn players or those who refuse to play the Sicilian with black and choose to respond with e5. This will be a tournament where 10 games will be played simultaneously with 10 days to make each move. I hope you sign up. Greetings!! APERTURA ITALIANA 2025 - Chess.com

During the 19th century, London had been the setting for some great tournaments: the first international tournament in 1851, the first double round robin tourney in 1862, the contest of 1883 and Lasker's triumph of 1899. In December 1921 the British Chess Federation decided to hold an international tournament of sixteen players as the main event of its 1922 congress. Invitations were sent to Capablanca, Alekhine, Rubinstein, Bogoljubov, Reti, Tartakover, Vidmar, Euwe, Borislav Kostic and Frank Marshall, but the last two had problems with their travelling expenses and were unable to accept. The current British Champion and the Champions of Australia and Canada were also invited. Held in the Central Hall Westminster, London (1), the tournament ran from July 31 to August 19, 1922. Many games played in this tourney would later grace the best games collections of a number of players. All the games, round by round, with the classifications. All this accompanied by a tournament in which you can participate, with 3 rounds and 10 days to make each play. Everyone is welcome and enjoy chess. https://www.chess.com/tournament/torneo-de-londres-1922

In 1894 Lasker became the second official world champion, dethroning the great Steinitz. The following year the first super tournament in the history of chess was organized with great success. https://www.chess.com/tournament/torneo-hastings-1895 Pillsbury achieved a surprising victory ahead of the quartet of the world's best: Lasker, Steinitz, Chigorin and Tarrasch. But although the American Pillsbury continued playing at a high level, he was never able to repeat something similar, probably suffering from a serious illness. Lasker manages to establish himself as a world champion by winning practically everything he plays. Years go by and the United States is going to organize its first international tournament, Cambridge Springs 1904 https://www.chess.com/tournament/torneo-cambridge-springs-1904 That tournament is going to be won by Frank Marshall, a local player and representative of the new generation that will soon become the best in the United States. Lasker was relegated to 2nd place. In that first decade of the 20th century, Lasker defended his world champion title 4 times against the best players, and added to the match with Steinitz in 1896, there were 5 defenses of the title. Also in 1909, José Raúl Capablanca suddenly emerged, winning a match with surprising ease against Frank Marshall, the best in the United States. That great triumph opens the doors to a super tournament organized in San Sebastian, Spain, where the demands to take part are very high and Capablanca clearly cannot satisfy them, due to his youth and inexperience, and that creates doubts about his inclusion for some participants... .. https://www.chess.com/tournament/torneo-san-sebastian-1911 Capablanca's triumph shakes the chess world and a new candidate emerges to challenge Lasker for the world title (the other was Rubinstein). The Cuban does not waste time and makes all the necessary arrangements to face Lasker, but the champion sets the conditions, and they cannot be satisfied by Capablanca, the match is frustrated and the first sparks begin between these two giants. But fortunately, before the world goes crazy, a super tournament will be organized in Saint Petersburg in 1914, where the world champion Emanuel Lasker, the main contenders Rubinstein and Capablanca, a young man with good projection, Alexander Alekhine, will be present. , the great theorists of the time who clashed their ideas in the newspapers and at the same time dedicated themselves to reviling opposing ideas, Tarrasch and Nimzovich, a group of great players, some veterans like Blackburne and Gunsberg, but devoid of the Austro-Hungarian players due to the great tensions between the empires of Russia and Austria-Hungary… This tournament, like the one in San Sebastián, is key in the history of chess, and I will reproduce all the games as in the previous ones, in addition to reviewing subsequent world events and the future of the most important players. https://www.chess.com/tournament/torneo-san-petersburgo-1914
On 20 February 1911, an outstanding chess tournament began in the Basque city of San Sebastián (Basque: Donostia). Fifteen chess masters were invited, who had earned the right to participate by getting excellent results in earlier tournaments. Among the participants were the best players of the time, namely Siegbert Tarrasch, Frank James Marshall, Carl Schlechter, Geza Maroczy, David Janowski, Amos Burn, Akiba Rubinstein, Aron Nimzowitsch, Rudolph Spielmann, Milan Vidmar, Ossip Bernstein, Richard Teichmann, Oldrich Duras, Paul Saladin Leonhardt and the young José Raúl Capablanca, who was still unknown in Europe. Of the world’s best players, only Emanuel Lasker was actually missing. Lasker, as well as Henry E. Atkins, had been invited but did not accept the invitation. Instead, Lasker commented on the games of the tournament from Berlin for the New York Evening Post. Lasker married Martha Cohn on 1 March 1911, which was perhaps the reason for the cancellation. The venue for the tournament, which ran from February 20 to March 17, was the Grand Casino in San Sebastián. All tournament games will be broadcast, round by round, with round-by-round rankings. And we will compete in a 3-round tournament, with 10 simultaneous games with 10 days of time for each play. 14 places left. https://www.chess.com/tournament/torneo-san-sebastian-1911
Cambridge Springs was a spa resort in Pennsylvania, famous for its spas and mineral waters. It advertised that it was the city that was halfway between New York and Chicago when you took the Erie Railroad line. It is in northwestern Pennsylvania, about 30 miles south of Erie, Pennsylvania. The city was founded at the beginning of the 19th century by German and Irish families. It was first called Cambridge Township and then Cambridgeboro. In 1897 it was changed to Cambridge Springs to recognize the importance of the mineral springs in the area. Mineral waters were supposed to cure almost anything. In 1903, William Douglass Rider, Jr. wanted an international chess tournament at his resort hotel (built 1895-1897). Most support and funding was provided by Rider and the directors of the Eire Railroad Company. Additional support was received from chess clubs across the country in the form of subscriptions to daily chess newsletters. Another financial backer was Professor Isaac Leopold Rice (1850-1915), a millionaire who made his fortune as a corporate lawyer. Another financial backer was Baron Albert de Rothschild (1844-1911) of Vienna. The prize fund was $3,100 (equivalent to $62,000 in today's money!). $100 in 1904 had the purchasing power of $2,000 in 2003. The event would be played from April 25 to May 19, 1904. Cambridge Springs was a spa resort in Pennsylvania, famous for its spas and mineral waters. Along with the European masters, the Americans had the American champion and world number 3 player Harry Nelson Pillsbury (31) from Philadelphia, the New York champion and world number 10 player Frank Marshall (26) from Brooklyn, the former American champion Jackson Showalter (45) from Kentucky, Brooklyn Chess Club champion Albert Fox (22) from New York, former Brooklyn champion William Napier (22) from Pittsburgh (he won the British championship after this tournament in 1904), former U.S. champion and New York State champion Albert Hodges (42) from Staten Island, New England champion John Barry (30) from Boston, and four-time New York State champion Eugene Delmar ( 62) from New York.Of the top 11 players in the world, only Tarrasch (#4), Maroczy (#5) and Blackburne (#9) were missing. On April 19, the European teachers traveled to Washington, D.C., where they were welcomed by President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House. The tournament participants arrived in Cambridge Springs on April 21, 1904. On April 25, 1904, the first round of one of the strongest chess tournaments ever held began at the Rider Hotel in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. The Rider Hotel was a large hotel that had 500 rooms, including a bowling alley. The tournament rules, adopted at the Hastings Chess Congress of 1895, prohibited consultations on adjourned games. You couldn't even enter a room with any other player during the intervening period between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. No ties were allowed in less than 30 moves unless it was a forced draw (there were only 2 ties in less than 30 moves). The game was from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and then from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The time control was 30 moves in 2.5 hours, then 15 moves every hour thereafter. The rules were adopted by the players on April 24, 1904.This was the first major American tournament of the 20th century.World champion Lasker had not played a chess tournament in four years. His last tournament was Paris in 1900, which he won with 14 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. For the first time in the history of chess tournaments, a daily chess bulletin was produced showing all the games from the previous day's round.Cambridge Springs was the first international tournament for Barry, Fox, Hodges and Lawrence.During the tournament, a Rice Gambit consultation team event was held.
