I've been working with the Picochess team for awhile now. Essentially, this is a way to interface a chess engine a DGT chess clock for the GUI. Further integration includes a DGT smart board for detecting moves on the board. I had fun with this project, it's part hardware (developing Raspberry Pi based computer with specialized 3D printed housing and widescreen display) and part software (re-imagining a chess GUI to be used from a chess clock form factor without the limitations of the existing DGT clock matrix display).

I've been interested in the design of chess GUIs for awhile. I just haven't been satisfied with what's available for macOS. This is a bigger issue now that new Macs no longer use intel CPUs or can use Windows x64 in virtual machines (we now need to use Windows ARM). Here were some of my initial designs. As I try to distill the core functions and layout most chess players expect.
