The lot of you will probably play 1.e4 on the board, but let me explain the Queen's Gambit, which is exceding popular in high-level chess.
It's not really a "Gambit" as the name suggests, but it is momentarily giving away a pawn to decoy the enemy d-pawn away from its important position on d5, controlling c4 and e4. If they take your pawn, it is good. If you ever see this position on the board, this is the continuation.
