. LCML Season 4 - RULES OF PLAY LCML Season 4 is played in the Swiss format. on 5 rounds. The starting date of each round is announced by the TD, together with the instructions to arrange the matches. Each round has a deadline, within which all the matches of that round must be played. As soon as the pairings are published, team captains must contact the captain of the opponent team and negotiate the date/time of their match. The date of the match must be set within the deadline. Derogation to this rule can only be asked by a captain upon valid motivation. In case a match is postponed, the TD communicates the new deadline for that single match, after consultation with the requiring team. If the match is not played within the new deadline by cause of the requesting team, that team loses the match by forfeit. If a team does not respond to the challenge, the captain of the challenging team must inform the TD before the deadline. The TD will try and contact the captain of the non-responding team to receive explanations. In case of no response in due time, the active team will win the match by forfeit. If no claim is issued by any team and the match is not launched at the deadline, both teams lose the match by forfeit. Each round consists of 3 matches: I) U1600 blitz 3+2, II) O1600 blitz 3+2, III) Open rapid 10+5. Matches I and II start at the same time, match III follows, 30 minutes later. Scheduling matches I and II at the same start time is mandatory. Matches must be named, respectively, as: “LCML S4 Rn U1600 Team A vs Team B”, “LCML S4 Rn O1600 Team A vs Team B”, “LCML S4 Rn Open Team A vs Team B”, where n is the number of the Round (1 for the first round, 2 for the second, etc.). Time control must be set to 3 minutes + 2 seconds per move (3|2) for matches I and II, and to 10 minutes + 5 seconds per move (10|5) for match III. Rating must be set max 1600 for match I, min 1600 for match II, and left blank for match III. The parameters: game type, players per club, minimum games, setup, must be left at their default values. Matches are played over an unlimited number of boards, but is required to field at least 5 players on match I and match II, and 10 players on match III. In case one of the teams does not reach the required number of players, the opponent team wins by forfeit. If both teams do not reach the required number of players, they both lose by forfeit. Team captains are solicited to take a screenshot of the list of registered players to a match one minute before its start, to possibly claim for a forfeit win. In absence of such a proof, the match is considered as played by all and only the listed players of both teams. The claim for a forfeit win must be public. Standings are made counting 1 point for each blitz match won (0,5 points in case of a draw) and 2 points for each rapid match won (1 point in case of draw). At the end of the season, in case of parity between two or more teams on the first place, a separate classification will be made considering only the matches among the teams tied for the first place. At any time before the end of the season, the score of the matches can be adjusted for closed accounts. In case a player has a closed account, both games of that player are considered as lost, regardless the field score reported by chess.com. Besides this, a team gets a -1 penalty point for each closed account. This adjustment can affect the results of the matches and, therefore, the standings. Updates are made by the TD as soon as he gets informed of a closed account. Captains can inform the TD of such an occurrence at any time during the season. Final standings are issued not later than 7 days after the deadline of the last round. How to launch a challenge Go to the Live section of the chess.com site: https://www.chess.com/live Click on Tournaments at the top right of the window Click on Club Match at the bottom of the window Set the parameters of the match; Attention! There is a bug in the chess.com software: when you click on Find Club to find out the name of your opponent team, the edit box disappears; nonetheless, you shall write the first 5 letters of your opponent team’s name and a list of teams should appear; you may then scroll this list and choose the right name. NOTE 1 Be sure that the time control is set properly; there is a long list of time settings, you can even define your own special time setting, for instance 15+3 (it means games will last 15 minutes, after which players are given an extra time of 3 seconds per move). NOTE 2 When you set the start time of the match, the hour shown is your local hour, no matter where your opponent comes from; you should know in advance the time zone difference with your opponent; to avoid misunderstandings, always refer to well defined time zones, as CET (Central European Time). NOTE 3 You cannot set up a challenge if it is planned more than 1 week later; you have to wait until the system allows you to launch the challenge. NOTE 4 In the LCML there are no limitations related to players’ rating, nor to the number of players per club, so you may leave empty the 4 boxes of the last 2 lines. Once you have set the date and time of your match, the Create button will become active; click on it to launch the challenge; from that moment, the challenge will become visible to your opponent team, that may ACCEPT or DECLINE your challenge.

Dear all, on February 19th we should have completed Round 5 of the LCML. Five turns in a Swiss tournament with 14 teams are considered good enough to show up the real balance of strenght between the teams. Nevertheless, last season was played on 7 turns, so an option is to end also season 3 after seven turns. Since the number of turns has not been stated at the beginning of this season, we shall make a decision now. I kindly ask all teams that would like to play 6th and 7th turn to post a note in favour here. If the majority of teams wants to go to seven turns, then the Season will go on until the end of March, otherwise the Season will close next Sunday. Please make your choice within the next 6 days (deadline Saturday 18th, 21:00 CET). Thank you

LCML Season 3 (2022-23) RULES OF PLAY LCML Season 3 is played in the format of a swiss tournament. Pairings of each turn of the tournament (also called "Day"), together with all the necessary information, are announced by the Tournament Director (TD) on the home page of the LCML site and published on the web page of the Day. As soon as pairings are published, team captains must contact the captain of the opponent team and negotiate the date/time of their match. The date of the match must be set within the deadline. Derogation to this rule can only be asked by captains upon valid motivation. Captains shall launch the challenge as soon as possible (see https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/how-to-launch-a-challenge-a-tutorialfor details). Matches must be named as “LCML S3 Rn Team A vs Team B” where n is the number of the Round (1 for the first round, 2 for the second, etc.). When the challenge is accepted, the captain who launched the challenge shall post a note on the page of the Day with the link to the match. Time control must be 10 minutes + 5 seconds per move (10|5). All other parameters (game type, rating, players per group) must be left at their default values. Derogation to this rule can only be asked by captains upon valid motivation. If a team does not respond to the challenge, the captain of the other team shall inform the Tournament Director before the deadline. The TD will try and contact the captain of the missing team to have explanations. In case of no response in due time, the active team will win the match by forfeit. If no claim is issued and the match is not launched at the deadline, both teams will lose the match by forfeit. Games can be played over an unlimited number of boards. However, team captains are solicited to take a screenshot of the list of registered players few minutes before the game starts, because the number of players fielded can affect the result of the match as by Rule 7. Failing to provide evidence of the number of registered players may render Rule 7 unapplicable. In case both teams registered 5 or more players, or both teams registered the same number of players, but less than 5, the result of the match is determined by the score of the games effectively played, as provided by chess.com. In any other case, the team that registered more players gets +2 bonus points for every player that wasn’t paired in the first 5 boards, while the opponent team gets -1 penalty point for every missing player. In case both teams fielded 5 players or more, the result of the first 5 boards is recorded separately to form the special standings of the TTT – Top Teams Trophy. In case one of the teams, in the first 5 boards, showed less than 5 players, the opponent team gets 2 points for every missing board. In case a player is banned, his/her games are considered both as lost. If the ban occurred in the first 5 boards, the banned player is considered also a ‘no show’, and his/her team gets -1 penalty point. The result of the match will be changed according to this rule as soon as the ban is known (i.e. when the symbol of the ban appears in the match roster). Standings are made considering, in order: 1) match points; 2) game points (including bonuses and penalties); 3) matches won; 4) games won; 5) less penalties. Text in red color added on 15/1/2023

This post is intended to show some examples of how points are calculated in LCML Season 2 tournaments. Example 1 In Div. B one team (Team X) comes with 4 players, the opposing team (Team Y) comes with 2 players. The match is played over 2 boards (=4 games) and ends up with the field score of 3 to 1 in favour of Team X. Team X wins the match by forfeit because Team Y had less than the minimum number of boards required (3 for Div. B). Team X gets 3 points on the field plus additional 3 board points for the missing board of Team Y. Recorded result is: Match points Board points Team X 1 6 Team Y 0 1 Example 2 In Div. B one team (Team X) comes with 5 players, the opposing team (Team Y) comes with 7 players. The match is played over 5 boards (=10 games) and ends up with the field score of 5 to 5. Both teams met the minimum boards requirement, therefore the result is entirely made on the field. Recorded result is: Match points Board points Team X 0.5 5 Team Y 0.5 5 Example 3 In Div. A one team (Team X) comes with 9 players, the opposing team (Team Y) comes with 5 players. The match is played over 5 boards (=10 games) and ends up with the field score of 7 to 3 in favour of Team X. Team Y failed to meet the minimum boards requirement, therefore it looses by forfeit. Team X gets 6 more board points for the 2 missing boards of Team Y. Recorded result is: Match points Board points Team X 1 13 Team Y 0 3 Example 4 In Div. B one team (Team X) comes with 2 players, the opposing team (Team Y) comes also with 2 players. The match is played over 2 boards (=4 games) and ends up with the chess.com score of 3 to 1. Both teams failed to meet the minimum boards requirement, therefore they both get 0 match points due to forfeiting. Recorded result is: Match points Board points Team X 0 3 Team Y 0 1 Example 5 In Div. A one team (Team X) comes with 6 players, the opposing team (Team Y) comes with 3 players. The match is played over 3 boards (=6 games) and ends up with the chess.com score of 6 to 0 in favour of Team Y. Both teams failed to meet the minimum boards requirement, therefore they both get 0 match points. Team X gets 9 board points for the 3 missing boards of Team Y. Recorded result is: Match points Board points Team X 0 9 Team Y 0 6

LCML SEASON 2 RULES OF PLAY(ed.II 15-1-2022) LCML Season 2 is run in two parallel tournaments (Div. A and Div. B), according to the average number of live matches played by teams in recent times and their past history in LCML tournaments. Both divisions will be played as a round robin tournament. Pairings of each turn ("Day") of the tournament are published by the Tournament Director (TD) on the web page of the Day and announced on the home page of the LCML. As soon as pairings are published, team captains must contact the captain of the opponent team and negotiate the date/time of their match. The date of the match must be set within the deadline. Derogation to this rule can only be asked by captains upon valid motivation. Captains shall launch the challenge as soon as possible (*). When the challenge is accepted, the captain who launched the challenge shall post a note on the page of the Day with the link to the match. Matches shall be named as “LCML S2 Rn Team A vs Team B” where n is the number of the Round (1 for the first round, 2 for the second, etc.); time control shall be 10+5 (10|5), that means 10 minutes per game + 5 seconds per move; all other parameters (game type, rating, players per group) must be left at their default values. If a team does not respond to the challenge, the captain of the other team shall inform the Tournament Director before the deadline. The Tournament Director will try and contact the captain of the missing team to have explanations. In case of no response in due time, the active team will win the match by forfeit, getting 1 match point and full game points. If no claim is issued and the match is not launched at the deadline, both teams will loose the match by forfeit (0 match points, 0 game points for both teams). Games are played over an unlimited number of chessboards. At the start of the match, both teams must have registered at least 7 players in Div.A and at least 3 players in Div.B. If a team registered a number of players less than the minimum required, that team gets 0 match points. If both teams registered less than the minimum required, both teams get 0 match points. If one of the teams registered less players than the minimum required, then the other team will get 3 game points for any board where the opponent is missing, up to the minimum required. If both teams registered less than the minimum required, then the team with more players will get 3 game points for any board where the opponent is missing. If the match starts with less than 7 boards (in Div.A) or less than 3 boards (in Div.B), due to the fact that a single team registered less players, the team that registered a regular number of players shall provide evidence of this fact. The easiest way to do so, is to take a screenshot of the list of registerd players few minutes before the game starts. No derogation to this rule is possible. Failing to provide evidence of the number of registered players can cause the application of rule 6 also to the team that registered a regular number of players. Standings are made considering, in order: 1) match points; 2) board points; 3) difference between won games and lost games; 4) buchholz score. A team that does NOT respond to two challenges in a row (“missing team”) is cancelled from the tournament. In the standings, its match points and game points are set to 0, while all points gained or lost by other teams in matches versus the missing team are confirmed. Dear chess friends, I would like to open Season 2 of the LCML next month, January 2022, taking into account the lessons learned during Season 1. In preparation of the new tournament launch, I would like to collect your opinions reguarding the following points: 1) should we have only one Division instead of two? In case of one division, less experienced teams can play friendly matches on their demand without affecting the standings. 2) should we fix a certain day of the week (such as Monday) to play the games? (Sundays and Saturdays are full of matches usually) 3) shall we revise the minimum number of chessboards required for a match? (in S1 we had 8 for Div.A and 4 for Div.B) 4) shall we reduce the time interval from one tournament Day and the next one? (in S1 we had 3-5 weeks that seems quite long to me) Every comment is welcome! Regards TMK

LCML SEASON 1 RULES OF PLAY(new release May 11, 2021) LCML Season 1 is run in two parallel round robin tournaments (Div. A and Div. B). Pairings of each turn of the tournament (also called "Day") and the deadline for completing that turn are announced by the Tournament Director (TD) on the home page of the LCML site and published on a dedicated page. As soon as pairings are published, team captains must contact the captain of the opponent team and negotiate the date/time of their match. The date of the match must be set within the deadline. Derogation to this rule can only be asked by captains upon valid motivation. Day 1 has been used only to split teams in two divisions. Captains shall launch the challenge as soon as the system allows for doing it, i.e. not earlier than 7 days from the foreseen date of the match (see https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/how-to-launch-a-challenge-a-tutorial for details). When the challenge is accepted, the captain who launched the challenge shall post a note on the page of the Day containing the link to the match. Matches shall be named as “LCML S1 Rn Team A vs Team B” where n is the number of the Round (1 for the first round, 2 for the second, etc.); time control shall be 10+5 (10|5), that means 10 minutes per game + 5 seconds per move; a different time control can be agreed between teams, provided it is >=10 min.; all other parameters (game type, rating, players per group) must be left at their default values. If a team does not respond to the challenge, the captain of the other team shall inform the Tournament Director before the deadline. The Tournament Director will try and contact the captain of the missing to have explanations. At the start of the match, both teams must have at least 8 players (in Div.A) or 4 players (in Div.B) ready to play. If a team comes with less than the minimum required, that team will loose the match by forfeit (0 match points). The games shall be played anyway, since board points are valid. Each team will be credited 2 game points for any board where the opponent is missing. IMPORTANT If the match starts with less than 8 boards (in Div.A) or less than 4 boards (in Div.B), due to the fact that a single team brought less players, the team that brought a regular number of players shall provide evidence of this fact. The easier way to do so, is to take a screen shot of the list of players few minutes before the game starts. No derogation to this rule is possible. Failing to provide evidence of the number of players ready to play can cause the application of rule 5 also to the team that brought a regular number of players. Standings are made considering, in order: 1) match points; 2) board points; 3) difference between won games and lost games; 4) buchholz score. After Day 1, teams are divided in two Divisions: Div.A is formed by the teams that undertake to bring a minimum of 8 boards at next maches, Div.B by the teams that undertake to bring a minimum of 4 boards at next maches. From Day 2 on, the two Divisions will play two separate round robin tournaments.

LCML SEASON 1 RULES OF PLAY Pairings are announced by the Tournament Director (TD) in the home page of the LCML site and published in the tournament page. As soon as pairings are published in the tournament page, team captains shall contact their opponent captain and negotiate the date/time of their match. The date of the match must be set within the published deadline. Derogation to this rule can be asked by captains upon valid motivation. Captains shall launch the challenge as soon as the system allows for doing it, i.e. not earlier than 7 days from the foreseen date of the match (see https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/how-to-launch-a-challenge-a-tutorial for details). When the challenge is accepted, the captain who launched the challenge shall post a note on the tournament page containing the link to the match. If a team (say Team A) does not respond to the challenge launched by the opponent team (say Team B), then the captain of Team B shall inform the Tournament Director of this fact before the deadline. The Tournament Director will try and contact the captain of Team A to have explanations. In case of no response in due time, Team B will win the match by forfeit, getting 1 match point and 10 game points. If no claim is issued and the match is not launched at the deadline, both teams will loose the match by forfeit (0 match points, 0 game points for both teams). Games are played over an unlimited number of chessboards. At the start of the match, both teams shall have at least 5 players ready to play. If a team deploys less than 5 players, that team will loose the match by forfeit (0 match points), but games shall be played anyway, since game points remain valid (*). (*) For example, if Team A deploys 4 players and Team B deploys 7 players, then the match will be played over 4 chessboards; suppose Team A wins 5 to 3, then Team A gets 0 match points and 5 game points, Team B gets 1 match point and 3 game points. IMPORTANT If the match starts with less than 5 players, due to the fact that a single team deployed less than 5 players, the team that brought more than 5 players shall provide evidence of this fact. The easier way to do so, is to take a screen shot of the list of players before the game starts. No derogation to this rule is possible. Failing to provide evidence of the number of players ready to play can cause the application of rule 5 also to the team that deployed more than 5 players. Standings are made considering, in order: 1) match points; 2) game points; 3) won games minus lost games; 4) direct match. After Day 1, teams will be divided in two Divisions: Div.A will be formed by the teams of the first half of the standings, Div.B by the teams of the second half of the standings. From Day 2 on, the two Divisions will play two separate round robin tournaments. At the end of the two tournaments, the winner of Div.B and the first three teams of Div.A will play a new round robin tournament to elect the winner of LCML S1.
