When I noticed this title in Joseph's group for North Carolina players, I was intrigued. I see that NC's motto is "esse quam videri." (To be rather than to seem.) That is also the motto of the Scot Sir Robert Moray (1609-1673). I have a great interest in Moray, and I've thought that esse quam videri is as good a motto to try to live up to as any. Do you have any idea how NC decided to pick this for the Great Seal?
A good plan today, is better than a perfect plan tomorrow!

As reported in New York Observer, Playboy now has first serial rights to Vladimir Nabokov's last unfinished novella titled The Original of Laura. Previously, the rights were held by Nabokov's son Dmitri who was not selling the rights. Earlier this year Dmitri reconsidered and hired agent Andrew Wylie to find a publisher. At first Wylie ignored Playboy's pursuits for the work and sent the novella to The New Yorker who passed on the piece. Playboy then wooed Wylie with orchids (a reference from Nabokov's book Ada) and an undisclosed amount of money. A 5000-word excerpt from the work will appear in the December issue of Playboy which will hit stands on November 10. Knopf will be publishing the book itself which will hit stores a week later.

Through the days of our life we stumble upon many . With some of them is love at first sight (love as in agape not eros), others we hate from the moment we lay our eyes on them and others just pass away unnoticed. How can we tell if the one we just met will be our friend for life, our enemy or just one of the many faces we won"t see again. ? Is it really necessary to put him/her to a test or can we know for sure from the begining ?
"We come from a dark abyss, we end in a dark abyss, and we call the luminous interval life." What do you think about this ?
First let me tell you that I am very happy to be a member in this group and please forgive me if sometimes my english will be hard to understand. For now I have a simple question for all of you and I will appreciate it so much if you will notice this topic and share your thoughts about it with me. OK and now the qustion : how many compromises should a man make in his life to achieve his gouls and how will he know when to draw the line and say : "this is it ! thats as far as I am willing to go !"
Here's an interesting problem from Nabokov. He composed this in April 1967 while in Italy. He was hunting butterflies, but failed to catch any. He thought this problem up instead. This is White to move and mate in three. After White's correct move, there are two possible replies by Black, both leading to Mate in 3. Enjoy!
