I would be interested to see if this could work. After each player has moved, the board changes shape and all the peices coordinates are translated into coordinates for the new board shape. Some possible board shapes are: Regular board Infinity symbol shaped board Doughnut shaped board circular chessboard pacman chessboard (when you go off one end of the board you come out at the other end. Ei, the 9th rank is the 1st and the a file is the i file) cylandral chessboard (the a file is the i file) Spherical chess board (think of all the corners coming around and meeting at a point. Eg, a rook goes from a5 to a1, then continues to come out h1 going up the board to h4) Super complicated, but stops you from getting bored.

Game over. snprook and preachingforjesus drew by resignation. There are 3 players. First moves white, then black, then red. All of the pieces move normally but things can get a bit confusing when going through the center, so I recommend that you read this page. The first player to checkmate somebody wins. It isn't "last man standing" the way 4 way chess is. Note that i will not be rotating the board. This is because PhotoFiltre messes up the image quality when the board is rotated by a number of degrees not divisible by 90. White will always be shown on the bottom. Post your move using algebraic notation. The first post (this one) will have a move list and a picture of the board. Every time I see a new post, I will update the picture of the board. Make sure you track this topic so that you know when it is your move. As soon as you join the game post something so that I know. The game will begin as soon as we have 3 people ready to go. Game over. Team 2 wins. In bughouse chess, there are 2 teams of 2 players. And 2 boards, too. Teammates play on separate boards and opposite colors. When you capture a piece, it goes into your teammate's storehouse.Your teammate can, instead of making a normal move, put a piece on the board from the storehouse. Pieces can only be placed on vacant squares. Pawns may not be placed on the first and last rank. If a promoted pawn is captured, it becomes a pawn in the storehouse. The game ends as soon as anybody gets checkmated. So even if you are about to lose in one turn, but your teammate checkmates his/her opponent your team wins. The game will start as soon as we have 4 players ready to go. Post your move using algebraic notation. When placing a piece from the storehouse, use the @ symbol in your notation. For example to place a knight from the store house on d6, type N@d6. When I see a move posted I will update and flip the diagram. Also, the games are not simultaneous. Hello all, after a while of secluded thought, I have managed to come up with quite a few daft variants, the sanest of which I will show here. The name of this variant is Chance Chess, for obvious reasons. This variant is played with the same rules as normal chess, but at the start of each move, the player lists three possible moves to play in the situation. The move actually played will be determined by a regular 6-sided die, rolled by a non-involved neutral party. (Rolls 1-2= 1st move, 3-4= 2nd move, 5-6= 3rd move). Play will continue until checkmate, or resignation. In situations where there are not three playable moves, the move will either be absolutely forced, or determined by a 50-50 roll, with only two choices named. In situations with less than three good moves, well, too bad, that's how the game is played. I think this game will produce funny, more even games, that everyone can enjoy. I understand many of you may be vehemently opposed to this variant, as it takes much of the skill from the game, but if you don't like it, you don't have to play. Thanks for listening.
Jungle chess: You king moves like a knight, instead of bishops you have zebra's (jump 2,3), instead of rooks you have giraffes (jump 1,4), instead of knights you have camels (jump 1,3). instead of pawns you have checkers and the queen (or possibly tarzan?) can move like any of the above. Newton Ball Chess: So, it basicly goes like this: White rook moves along it's rank and stops next to black's rook and blacks pawn comes out the end moving like rook and takes the queen. The rule being that if there are 2 or more peices next to each other and a peice tries to take one at the end, the peice at the other end beaks off moving like the attacker and if there it encounters a peice it takes it, else it hits the end of the board bounces off and returns to the original spot and the attacker is then pushed back to it's original spot. If there are no lines of peices the normal rules aply (I'm sorry if this was badly explained but it's fairly complicated.) Super chess: Knights are nightriders, pawns are superpawns (move forward like rook and take like bishop), queens are amazons riders (queen+nightrider), the king can move as a queen, bishops can jump to any square the same colour as the one it's currently on that is unoccupied as well as the usual moves, and rooks can attack down entire rows (but not ranks) and take all of the peices in them in one turn.
Game over. preachingforjesus wins. Elephant: Moves like a knight or like a rook. (looks like an actual elephant, not like the standard piece.) Hawk: Moves like a knight or a bishop. (looks like an actual bird, not like the standard piece.) Idea from Lahlie, text from Wikipedia. "The elephant and the hawk are introduced to the game in the following way: whenever the player moves a piece from its starting position (that hasn't already been moved), one of the pieces in hand may be placed immediately on the square just vacated. One cannot use the placing of an elephant or hawk to block check. If the player moves all his pieces from the first rank without placing one or both in hand pieces, he forfeits the right to do so. After castling, the player may put one of the pieces in hand on either the king's or the rook's square, but he may not place both pieces in hand in the same turn. Pawns may promote to a hawk or an elephant in this game (in addition to the normal chess pieces). When notating games in algebraic notation, the letter E is used for the Elephant and H for the Hawk. If the player places one of the two pieces on the board, it's written after a slash. For example, 1. Nc3/Eb1 means that the player moved his knight from b1 to c3 and placed the elephant on b1." Post your move using algebraic notation. The first post (this one) will have a move list and a picture of the board. Every time I see a new post, I will update the picture of the board and turn it so that the side who's turn it is comes up in front. Make sure you track this topic so that you know when it is your move. As soon as you join the game post something so that I know. The game will begin as soon as we have 2 people ready to go. We have all probably seen this question asked for standard chess pieces; rooks, queens, knights, bishops, but what if we tried to solve this for variant pieces? What is the greatest number of hawks which can be placed on a board in such a way so that none of them attack/defend eachother? What about Elephants? Wizards? Champions? Amazons? Other variant pieces? Shogi?? For hawks I got 14, elephants are easy because it's the same as for rooks, i.e. eight. Try to figure out more! Note that for the wizards and champions you should use an Omega Chess board, so that it makes sense. Please ignore the kings in the diagrams. Queens represent hawks in first diagram Queens represent elephants in second diagram

This is a variant I've been tinkering with for a while, so I thought I'd post it here. It's inspired by the Gipf project series of games. You start with a standard game of chess, called the main game. Each player has three tokens: a can, a coin, and some animal figure. Each token can be used to make a special move. You declare the use of the token, and the move you want to make. Using the can allows you to make a move as if the board wrapped around and the h-file was adjacent to the a-file. Using the coin allows you to take one of your captured pieces and place it down on any empty square as your move. Using the animal figure allows you to move anyone piece as if it was a knight. The tokens can only be used once, and are lost as soon as the move is declared. After you declare the use of the token and the move, your opponent can challenge the move. To resolve the challenge you play another game called the challenge game. If the can token was used, you play a game of cyllindrical chess. If the coin token was used, you play a game of crazy house. If the animal token was used, you play a game of Seirawan chess. If the challenger wins the challenge game, play returns to the game the challenge was made in, and the mover must make another move (they can try to use a different token on the other move if they wish). If the challenger loses the challenge game, play returns to the game the challenge was made in and the move is made as declared. During the challenge game, players still have their other tokens, and can use them as in the main game. So a player in the main game could use the animal token and get challenged. Then during the challenge game of Seirawan chess either player could use the can token and get challenged. A game of cyllindrical chess would then be played to resolve the outcome of the move of the Seirawan chess game, and then the Seirawan chess game would be finished to determine the outcome of the move in the main game. The winner of the main game wins the game. And of course, the prefered way to play this would be Fischer Random Gipf Chess, where the main game and all challenge games use Fischer Random set up and castling rules.

In crazyouse chess, when you capture one your opponent's pieces or pawns it changes color and goes into your storehouse. Then, at any point in the game, you may place a piece from your storehouse onto any vacant square on the board. Pawns may not be placed onto the first or last rank. When a promoted pawn is captured, it goes into the storehouse back as a pawn. To notate placing a storehouse piece onto the board use the @ symbol. For example to place a captured knight onto f6, you write N@f6. Pieces can be dropped to deliver check. When you post your move, put the position onto a diagram. Copy the FEN from the diagram of the previous move and use it to make a new diagram which has your move included into it. Also copy the move list and pieces in hand list and apdate both in accordance with your move. This will make it so that you can play even when I am not here to update the board, but I will update it anyway as a backup (because this is the first time using this system.) The first post (this one) will have a move list and a picture of the board. This variant (don't have a name for it, but I guess it can be called Superpawn Chess) is almost the same as normal chess, but includes a new piece called the superpawn. Before the start of the game, the white player chooses two of his/her pawns to turn into superpawns. Then the black player does the same. It can move straight forward, but not to capture. It can move and capture forward-diagonally and sideways. It cannot move backwards. The superpawn can, just like the other pawns, move two squares straight forward when it is in its starting position [edit: and has not moved]. The superpawn may not take en passant, but can be taken en passant. In order to keep it from being too strong in the endgame, it can only promote to a knight, bishop, or rook, but not to a queen. It looks the same as a normal pawn, but with two lines through it so it is easier to tell it apart. In OTB play, you would either remember which pawns are superpawns or put a checkers under them. All rules not involving superpawns are the same as those of standard chess. Anybody think anything should be changed in this variant? Originally my dad made up the idea of the center pawns always starting out as superpawns, but then we decided that this way would be more fun. Also black getting to counter against where white puts the superpawns makes up for white's first move advantage. Thoughts?

White goes first, then green, then black, and then red. Pieces cannot move onto the black squares. When you checkmate a king you can either take control of the army (beware: if one of the kings is checkmated or if both are attacked in one turn, you are out completely. Also if you do this, you do not recieve double turns.) or if are not a risk taker, you may leave the pieces inert (that means they do nothing). Post your move using algebraic notation.
