Inheritance
Alexei was the first person in the Russian Royal family to receive hemophilia.
Hemophilia is a recessive disorder carried on the X chromosome, so men are more likely to have it. Alexei's mother, Alexandra, inherited hemophilia from her mother, Princess Alice, who was the daughter of Queen Victoria.
Symptoms
Alexei had prolonged bleeding from an early age, and his family feared he wouldn't survive his first month.
Impact
Alexei's hemophilia influenced royal decisions and contributed to the political instability that led to the Russian Revolution.
