Format
The Not-So Pro Variant Chess League is a team-based competition, consisting of an initial regular Phase, usually 8 weeks long, and subsequently a Playoffs Phase, usually four weeks long.
A week is comprised of a six days duration - which can be extended on special occasions, or shortened during emergencies - during which the games will be played, and a rest day, where unplayed games are ruled upon, data is formulated and new threads are created.
Four games per player are demanded each week, for a max total of 4 game points per player. Won games are worth 1 game point each, being drawn games worth half a game point and losses worth 0 game points each, respectively.
Being each team comprised of 5 players, the max achievable game points per team is 20. A team is guaranteed to win in case it reaches 15 or more game points over the opposing team, thus getting 1 Match Point (MP). On the event of a tie - both teams in a pairing reaching exactly 8 game points, - 0.5 match points are awarded to each team. Losing teams are not awarded match points. They will, however, retain their game points for tiebreak purposes.
Games that were not played by the time a week is over are considered forfeit results, and will be ruled upon by the administration at the rest day. Points will be awarded according to each player's effort on getting a game and thorough following of all negotiation instructions, as stated in detail on every negotiation thread. E.g.: in case neither player has made effort to negotiate a time for their game, they'll both be awarded zero game points (0f) and receive forfeit penalty tiebreak points for their team.
Regular Phase
Consists of a Swiss eight rounds stage, where teams compete to climb up the Leaderboard and make it to the Top 8/16 (N/A so far). The Regular Phase will have one of the four variants each week in weeks 1 to 4, and then repeat each variant once during weeks 5 to 8. The four variants are:
3 Check
Crazyhouse
Fischer Random (960)
King of the Hill
Each player will play both colors in two different time controls: three minutes with a two second increment per move (3|2) and five minutes with no increment per move (5|0), regardless of order, for a total of 4 games per week in said variant.
After the eight regular playing weeks, the Top 8/16 (N/A so far) teams will advance to the Playoffs, which consist of one Semifinals and one Finals/3rd Place Match sequence of events. In case there are tied teams by the end of the Regular Phase, tiebreaks are as follows:
Game Points (GP) - Descending
Forfeit Points (FP) - Ascending
Highest Winning Streak
Playoffs Phase
Consists of a must-win two rounds elimination stage, following a Semifinals and Finals/3rd Place Match sequence of events. Based on the Top 8/16 (N/A so far) standings from the Regular Phase, seeding for the first round of the Playoffs Phase will be:
1st place from Regular Phase plays last place from Regular Phase (and so on from ways of: A vs F and B vs E)
Both winners from the Semifinals round will advance to the Finals round, while both losing teams from the Semifinals round will play in the 3rd Place Match decider.
The format for all Playoffs Phase rounds consists of one game in each particular variant, for a total of four games, regardless of playing order. The time control is five minutes with no increment per move (5|0). Players with bright background in the pairing table will play with the White pieces in all games, players with dark background will play with the Black pieces in all games.
In case of a tie in any particular round of the Playoffs, colors will be reversed and four more games will be played following extra tiebreak rounds, as described below, until a winner is declared:
Blitz Tiebreaks - Three minutes with a two second increment per move (3|2)
Bullet Tiebreaks - Two minutes with a one second increment per move (2|1)
Bullet Tiebreaks - One minute with no increment per move (1|0)
Requirements
To join as a Player in the Not-So Pro Variant Chess League it is required that the chess.com member has a minimum of 3 months in the site, as well as a minimum of 10 rated Blitz games against different human opponents.
Games against computer live bots do not count to the minimum games required. Players failing to meet the requirements might still apply through the official form, however, it is a player's responsibility to communicate the administration once requirements are met, in case they so desire to join at a later date.
All entries will be verified for deliberate rating manipulation, which is a form of fair play abuse and therefore will not be tolerated.
Teams
Each team has 5 players, which are divided into 5 boards respecting a rating ladder, being, in the very majority of cases, Board 1 the highest rated player and Board 5 the lowest rated player.
The average rating per team cannot surpass 1700 rating points, that is, the sum of all four player collected ratings cannot surpass 8500 points. In-depth info about a player's final rating can be found in the Rating Collection section.
A max difference of 100 rating points will be accepted, in case a higher Board player is lower-rated than the player(s) below him.
It is required that one of the players stands in the condition of a Team Captain.
Team Captain
Team Captains also stand in the condition of Players and have, among their responsibilities throughout the season, to:
Recruit, manage and represent their teammates;
Find a substitute player if needed, communicating the administration beforehand - max 48 hours from the start of a particular playing week - in case of a substitution, a change of rosters or player replacements of any kind;
Provide a team name no wider than 32 characters (spaces included) and optionally choose their team lettering and background color for the sheets, pairings and results threads;
Be active and communicative for as long as their team lasts in the competition.
Player
A Player has, among their responsibilities throughout the season, to:
Locate their respective negotiation thread at the weekly Pairings & Negotiation Threads club news post;
Read and follow the instructions therein to negotiate a time for his game;
Attend for their game in the accorded time;
Post their game result at the weekly Results thread;
Communicate their Team Captain beforehand in case of an impossibility to participate on a certain week or period of time;
Have their live chess challenge settings open to everyone in the accorded game time, or alternatively add their opponent to the friends list in order to play the game;
Accept to play for the same team during the season, being unable to join other teams in case of an elimination or withdrawal.
Substitute Player
Substitute Players (Subs) are teamless volunteer players which might be recruited by a team during a certain period, in the event of a Player being unable to play. Subs are allowed to play for one single team per week. For a substitution to be valid, the rating rules listed on Teams section need to be observed. Additionally, a Substitute Player cannot be rated higher than 100 rating points from the Player he is subbing for.
A substitution needs to be communicated by the Team Captain to the Administration no further than 48 hours (2 days) from the beginning of a playing week. On the event of extended weeks, for each 7 playing days comprised in it, there will be a plus of 48 hours added to this limit. E.g. a week that is 18 playing days long will have 144 hours (6 days) limit for communicating substitutions. Late substitutions will not be accepted.
All teamless Players which have signed on the official form and have not been assigned to a team will be shifted to the condition of Substitute Players once Team Formation ends, being then located at the Subs tab at the Google Spreadsheets.
Rating Collection
A player's final collected rating will be based on the following formula:
{ [ (FR + CH + KOTH + 3C) ÷ 4] + [BLITZ] } ÷ 2
Basically, upon the day of collection all four variant ratings will be averaged, then summed with the player's Blitz rating collected from a six months period prior to Team Formation - which is described in the Team Formation official news - and then averaged again for the final rating.
Plus 100 rating points will be added to a player's final collected rating for each non-played variant - this is known as Rating Penalty. In order to erase penalties, one must play at least ten games in said variant(s) and then contact an admin for rating recollection on the missing variant(s). The games can be played in any time control.
In case the administration finds out that there have been, for the purpose of rating manipulation, thrown games by said player - being it by early resigning, blatant intentional poor play or continuous attempts to mask a certain rating to hide playing strength, - it can lead to his ejection from the league and club itself.
To consult a player's final collected rating, please access the Google Spreadsheets through the Club Description above the notes.
Roster Changes
In case a Team Captain would like to change a team roster, he must send in his new line up to the administration so it can be checked and validated. Roster changes won't be allowed during a week, and should always be communicated before the next week begins, preferably until Wednesdays which are usually the deadline day for a particular week.
Before sending in a roster change, a captain must make sure that:
The new players have registered to the league in time;
The new average rating doesn't surpass the rating cap.
The old player will therefore be shifted to the condition of Substitute Player, in case he hasn't yet played for 3 different teams.
Use this tool for the purpose of rating calculation, consulting it along with the player collected ratings shown at the google sheets located at the club description.
Late communicated roster changes will only take place on the subsequent week.
Forfeits
In the event of a player failing to be online (no-show) in the scheduled game time or even 30 minutes after the scheduled game time, they must justify it on the respective Negotiation Thread and offer new time windows as quickly as possible.
The administration will be looking upon all negotiations closely for possible abuse of the negotiation system. Failing to show up twice in a week will award a forfeit win to the opponent. Failing to show for a game in the accorded time will also render the player a Strike.
If a player accumulates three Strikes he will thereby be ejected from the remainder of the season. In case there is a game scheduled late in the week and one of the players is a no-show, they are likely to receive a forfeit loss.
Arguing
The decision of the administration on any issue is final and should not be debated within the group. You may, however, politely petition the administration for a review of the decision via Private Messages. Constant arguing and complaint may result in a member's ejection from the club.
If you wish to ask any questions about the rules herein or about the general league operation and any details about its aspects, feel free to use the Q&A Forum for this purpose or message one of the admins.
IMPORTANT: Unnecessary comments are not appreciated in the Results Threads. Players may get muted/ejected from the rest of the season/ejected from the league if they do not cease to post unnecessary comments in the Results Threads after multiple warnings.
These rules are subject to change. Major changes will be communicated inside the club.
