Hi everyone. I came to chess by chance, and my teacher and friend taught me how to play chess.              Okay, I'll stop here! I'm too lazy hihi

Hey, I've been a chess fan in the upstate area for a long time, im specifically closer to syracuse/oswego, but am often out by auburn and Ithaca too. Are there any active players or events that happen anymore? I'd love to find a place to play over the board, or at the very least start playing online with people here so that something can be set up in the future. Either way I'd love to find more players in the area!

Does anyone remember the tourneys put on by Joe Ball in Syracuse? The location changed from time to time but I remember going to a hotel to play off Carrier Circle? This was a monthly tourney... and I am talking... 90's... and maybe 80's.... not sure when they ended...
Even during this Pandemic, I been looking for something in the Otsego and Delaware county area. Any idea's?

Does anyone know of any chess group that meets in or near Oswego? I'm interested in playing some over-the-board games in the Oswego area.

I am interested in trying a Team Match or Vote Chess. I believe you need to be a group admin to initiate these, but it appears the admins for this group have not logged in for quite a while. Anyone else out there interested?
I went over to the Chittenago Parks and Rec. and the chess club still meets. Its informal but was still alot of fun. Way better than playing online. They meet on monday night from 6pm - 9pm at the Chittango Parks and Rec building on mohawk street. Doesnt cost a thing, stop by.
I looked around and discovered that Georgia and Hawaii also have clubs around the same size as us. Any interest in me challenging them?

Should I set up another club tournament or would you guys prefer a match against another state. By the way, great playing all in our first two matches.

I see that team connecticut has challenged us to some chess. Can one group play another? If that is possible, I think it'd be really cool. Any thoughts?

So... I missed out on the first tournament and would like to have a second Upstate NY tournament. I just wanted to throw that out there. I realize that the first tourney is still going on but I wanted to see if people would be interested in starting a second one in about a month .... even if the first tourney isn't over. That would give me something to look forward to.      Also... I've had some bad experiences with the open challenge system lately so if anyone wants a game... feel free to send me a challenge.
I promised to post an example of the Dutch Defense after it came up last week.  It should be noted that the Dutch Defense is by no means the most popular response to 1. d4.  Chessgames.com lists 1. ... f5 (the Dutch Defense) as only the 4th most popular response to 1. d4.  The most popular response is Nf6, with 96,118 games in that database.  By way of comparison, the Dutch Defense has only 4,249 games listed. The example  posted below is the called the Classical Variation to the Dutch Defense.  Classical is as good a place as any to start.  Eric Schiller's book "Standard Chess Openings" states that the modern Stonewall Dutch is more popular at the higher levels of chess.  Perhaps a discussion of that opening in the future is warranted if anyone wants it.
Upstate New York Chess Club member ChessDonkey gets beat down from FM Tao7.  In the Donkey's defense, Tao7 is one of the highest rated players in Poland and has not lost a game on the site yet.  I am posting this not only to jab at the group's highest rated player (Donkey), but also because there is a pretty cool sequence of moves executed by Tao7 in this game.  I encourage everyone to post any interesting beat downs you recieve or dole out.  I'll just post the moves for this one and let Donkey comment if he wishes ...
This game was the first win in our tournament.  Don't do this...

Since the new tournament feature is up and running, seems to me that our club should host an Upstate Tournament and crown our champion.  Any thoughts on format?  How many people should we invite?  Who do you want me to invite besides us?
