3d Chess

I think an option for presented boards in the board editor should be a 14 by 14 by 14 cube board for 3d chess variants.  On this cube board I'm thinking the king would move one cube in any direction, and the queen would move any number of cubes in any direction.  The amazon would be able to move like a queen, move like a (2,1,0), (2,1,1), or (2,2,1) leaper, and the general would be able to move like a king, move like a (2,1,0), (2,1,1), or (2,2,1) leaper.  The grasshopper would hop over a hurdle, moving one cell beyond the hurdle, and could move in any direction.  All the other existing pieces would have movements that could be described using only two dimensions, or in other words have (m,n,0) movement.

Some 3d pieces I think could be added to the board could be

1. The Jedi which would be a (1,1,1) rider.

2. The Sith which would combine the movement of the Bishop and Jedi or in other words move as a combination of a (1,1,1) rider and (1,1,0) rider.

3. The Kanselier which would combine the movement of the Jedi and Rook or in other words be a combination of a (1,1,1) rider and a (1,0,0) rider.

4. The Lord which would combine the movement of the Bishop and Rook or in other words be a combination of a (1,1,0) rider and a (1,0,0) rider.

5. The Falcon which would be a (2,1,1) leaper.

6. The Eagle which would be a (2,2,1) leaper.

7. The Bat which would combine the movement of the Falcon and the Eagle.

8. The Wasp which would combine the movement of the Knight and the Falcon.

9. The Unicorn which would combine the movement of the Knight and the Eagle.

10. The Pterosaur which would combine the movement of the Knight, Falcon, and Eagle.

I think on a 3d board the Bishops would be move valuable than Rooks as Bishops can move in 12 different directions while rooks can only move in 6.  Also Siths would probably be much more powerful than a Bishop and Jedi as a Bishop could only reach 1/2 of the board, and an Jdi could reach 1/4 of the board, while a Sith could reach the entire board.

Raumschach, which was popular in Germany in the first half of the twentieth century, is the version of three-dimensional chess I would like to see on Chess.com.

EliTheGingerCat

After reading about it I agree, it would be cool to see Raumschach as a variant on chess.com.

BeautifulGoose

is a good idea, but i think it will be for later.

not before that sreen will be substitued by 3d laser projections.

Is completly impossible to make a 3d chess board on a 2d screen, the squares will be superimposed and we can't see the pieces behind.

Do you understand what i mean?

davidmachadosf

and if the pieces can evolve with the game, as if they were pokemons?

EliTheGingerCat

If you can manipulate the screen and move it around, I don't see why we couldn't use a two dimensional screen. Also, we don't know if we'll ever get three dimensional screens, so no point waiting for that [plus our eyes will never see in three dimensions].

@EliTheGingerCat One idea I have for how to move the screen around is to have only 1 level visible to a player at a time, with there being buttons next to the board to move what level 1 sees.

EliTheGingerCat

I think you need to be able to see everything at once in order to understand how to check your opponent.

What about a "time machine" move, so that you can revert movements an back to past? grin

seems hard to represent on a computer, and maybe impossible in real life.

One idea I have for how the board could be represented for 3d chess is similar to how I represented the board in this game I played of a 3d chess variant that I made up.

@1e4c6_O-1 I also have a blog explaining the rules of the variant of 3d chess I made here.  I'm thinking that the cells could have different hues as shown to help indicate where each Jedi can move, and different shades to indicate where each Bishop can move.  The idea is that this way it's possible to see the entire 3d board by scrolling and without the view of different cells overlapping.  I'm thinking castling and the movement of pawns could be similar to in the variant shown, so that pawns would move up instead of forward.

I edited the 3d board shown in my blog, so that the board has different shades in addition to different hues, so this way the Jedi are hue bound while the Bishops are shade bound.  One thing that can help with understanding the movement of the pieces is to notice that the Jedi just moves in the new type of direction in 3d, and the Falcon, and Eagle move similar to a Knight but take advantage of the extra dimension.
