I am using the Chrome browser extension for v3, is anyone else using one? (for any browser)

Commander_Riker

I have it but disabled now. I don't like too many extensions running behind the scenes. If you look they have hooks into just about every part.

Have you seen this? >>>https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chesscom-v3-analysis/bhjlkimpkkgkmfjlcfngmakenalgleap/related?hl=en

Could you send a link for the Chrome browser ex. for V3 please?

it was slowing your browser down?

can you say which browser, or what you used it for when you had it installed?

Ah, I see. For that level of customization we offer the Chess.com extension! https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chess-browser-extension/fcfojodfingmafbdmlekaaoogcfpjegg

Chrome 64 bit I hadn't noticed a big slow down but the extensions do have lots of access.

Regarding tweaking the browser - one can go through all the settings of whatever browser and tweak every single one that even might affect gaming performance.  Regarding a browser extension that chess.com put out -
I tried one and it actually made things worse.  happy.png

There's a lot to the browsers people don't know about.
For example Firefox has an about:config page with a gazillion settings on it that members can modify.
I discovered that many of them are telemetry settings.
I never thought before that that open-source software would relay people's usage back to browser headquarters headquarters.  In this case Mozilla.
Firefox also has a horrible SQLite file that grows and grows apparently.
I found a way around that one - but no good way around the telemetry garbage ....

Regarding tweaking something -
and the tweak having no perceptible effect on performance -
tweaks are additive.
One may need twenty or more.
Then suddenly your computer is more responsive.  Online and offline.
And powers up faster and shuts down much faster.
If one's computer takes over 30 seconds to shut down - its probably junked up.
And if it takes over 2 minutes to power up - that's junked up too.

well playerafar, thanks for answering the question that wasn't asked...

I use the Chrome extension, mainly to relieve myself from the glary white background that is the default in v3. I also don't like the font used, being taller but thinner than the v2 font, it's just so much harder work reading, where the crisp font before was just so much easier.

However, it would appear that the browser extension, for me at least, just adds yet more weight to the code. When i reach a new page and it fills up with all its content, the font can take as much as 5 or 10 seconds to change on the screen. A bit of a nuisance really, since you start reading then it changes before your eyes...

And also, particularly in this past week, the extension has also been failing to do what it's supposed to. I took these screen snips, were it not for them being useful for another thread, i wouldn't have bothered. You see, it doesn't matter what problems i report, they never seem to improve, and to be frank i just CBA with it any more...

In the past few days it seems to be not working more often than it works. For instance, while looking at this player's archive it took me to click through 14 different pages before it finally coloured the background the way it should...

it was suggested i might try a different browser...

so... chesstv... almost 2 hours in, i haven't been watching the whole time so there might be more than the 5 disconnects i've noticed. I've never used Edge before, not for anything, not even to try it out, so it's not all junked up... the v3 problem is not a browser problem...

...i started stripping out stuff... i had a swatch of my tartan (tiled) as my background wallpaper in v2, it always annoyed me that it was just a single swatch covered the whole page in v3... i took that out and went to default background. Made no noticeable difference in performance...

i cleared cache and cookies, something most of us don't do enough, it was less than 3 months since the last time i did this. No noticeable difference in performance...

I disabled my adblocker and uninstalled the chess.com browser extension (no other extensions installed), this led to a huge leap in speed. I've never used Edge before, so don't know if it has its own adblocker built in, or any other weighty components that could slow it down, but it would appear to me that unless the site has had a shot in the arm today, the chess.com browser extension is responsible for a large part of speed issues. I can't match @Martin_Stahl's "little more than a minute" to find #1500 on the blitz leaderboard, i did it just now in just under 3 minutes, but that's a huge increase since the other night when it took more than 10 minutes. By the time i reached #1000, when clicking on "more" there is a long enough delay for me to open the windows snip and take a snip of the "One moment please - generating leaderboard"...

definite speed loss tonight, feel like i'm right back where i started... but i have made no changes since last post...

Whatever the "V3 problems" are - other problems in anybody's system are probably going to make the V3 problems worse.
Including "problems" that one doesn't even know exist.
 There is no "IT".
And somebody seems to have missed at least one of my points - that I tried the chess.com browser extension - and it seemed to make things worse.
But that someone seemed to have a similiar experience with that browser extension.
It made things worse.
Three weeks to go Smile

This is what the extension looks like when I try to change the secondary button color:

The thing where I can change the color is under the edge of the extension window with no chance to scroll down to it, then making it unable to change the color to anything except the shades of red.
