Perhaps not all members of this group have been to Chapel Hill, but I know many have. I graduated from Carolina in 2006 with a degree in journalism and a second major in mathematics. I do not think I saw even a single over-the-board chess game during my studies in Chapel Hill, but I did not proactively seek out the chess club either.
I think the University has a fairly poor chess culture. This is probably true of most like-minded universities, but I cannot understand why. I visited New York City last summer and saw the chess conservatory in Central Park and old guys playing on street corners in Harlem. Perhaps New York is such a hotspot because it is so internationally diverse. But elite universities seem even more likely than urban centers to be chess inclined.
I moved to Charlotte after I graduated and moved back to Chapel Hill a couple years ago. I recently searched for the closest over-the-board chess club and was disappointed that a 35-minute drive to Durham was my best option. I posted an ad on Craigslist for Chapel Hill club interest and received four responses. I will respond to them sometime soon.
Does anyone have a contrasting Chapel Hill chess experience?
