Mushrooms are a strange and beautiful existence. Older than most life, and set to exist after we all die. Thus it should come as no surprise that humans would portray them as widely as we do in fiction. Mushrooms in fantasy can be home to fairies, or fairies themselves. You can never trust a potion that doesn't have a deadly glowing mushroom in the recipe. Or are you lost in the forest? Worry not! Just follow the bioluminescent mushrooms to another world. Clearly mushrooms are a staple of fantastical imaginations. Even artists have a certain fascination with the subject. So why don't we take a look at some exceptional interpretations of fungi.
A beautiful piece by Oehlers. It is part of his "The Wilderlands" collection. I unfortunately could not find a name for the specific piece, but I doubt that matters. The piece centres around a girl, standing in what can only be described as a mushroom field. Big and small mushrooms surround her. And in the distance is a blanket of fog. From somewhere not shown, leaves have fallen from a tree carried by a wind that makes the girls hair flutter.
By artist Clivenzu, "The Mushroom Witch and her Familiar" showcases a... well a mushroom witch with her familiar. I don't really know what else to say. All joking aside, it is a beautiful work, with amazing colours. I am a huge fan of the contrasting colours of the witch's blue hair (and frog) against the red mushrooms.
A little something from Clivenzu "Lil Backstory: The Mushroom witch is a student studying healing magic. She specializes in making potions of all kinds by growing mushrooms in her indoor garden -- Similar to how witches throw things in a cauldron and make a potion. The mushroom witch throws things in a pot to grow a mushroom."
Another mushroom themed piece from Oehlers. This time, the girl (I believe it's the same girl) is exploring the mushroom world. She should be careful. Mushrooms are a strange existence. The most beautiful and harmless looking mushrooms can be the most deadly.
I thought we may as well do one more Oehlers piece before moving on. This one is my favourite of his. A mushroom girl is the focus. This is the first piece I ever saw of Oehlers. At first I thought the girl was different from the girl in the other works, but I'm having second thoughts right now. I now feel that she's been lost so long in the mushrooms, that she's become one herself. A rather twisted ending, but that makes the art more interesting in my opinion.
Finally we can escape Oehlers Mushroom garden and stumble into "mushrooms" by skywheel. A beautiful piece showing either a little man looking up at ordinary mushrooms or an ordinary man looking up at huge mushrooms. Either way, it perfectly sets up a feeling of magnitude and magic for the mushrooms.
You know, these names aren't very creative. I suppose these amazing artists used their creativity coming up with pieces like the next one. "Mushroom" by yonaz is a landscape piece. It has a feeling of vastness, and mystery. A man is walking through this huge mushroom realm, perhaps hoping to explore this magical. Perhaps he heard rumors of a magic mushroom🤤 that could heal any ailment. He has gone there only to try and save his terminally ill wife. Let's hope he succeeds.
I do not know what this one is called, but it doesn't stop me from understanding it's beauty. Seika kept it simple with a painting of a large mushroom and a black cat. I guess she couldn't help adding an animal to her piece.
An interesting piece. She personifies a Fly Agaric. I don't really feel like there's much to say about it. I would like to mention that, Tarunadjaja has a few similar pieces. Some of her work has a surrealist style that I like.
I guess there's not much interest in naming art. A piece that really takes "mushroom person" to the logical limit. Different from the others, it shows a mushroom becoming sentient rather than the usual "person who is made out of mushroom" or shroomborg if you will. Unfortunately it seems like their tumblr page went quiet in 2018. So unless they have a new page (or come back to this one) you shouldn't hold onto hopes of seeing something new.

This is among my favourite pieces. Unfortunately I can't provide a link to the original because imgfave, provided a dead link and didn't even bother giving us a name. How irresponsible. (I know I could image search, and I am trying to. Problem is my internet is slow at the moment so it's not really happening. I'll post an update if I manage to find the original.)
"Empire of Mushrooms" is a collection of paintings. This is another fave of mine. Am I into mushrooms? No of course not, everyone else is just drawing a lot of mushroom girl art. It's not my fault they look aesthetically pleasing. Anyway the collection is all mushroom girls so take a look if that's something you like.
And that's about as far as I'm willing to write (and as far as your attention span can read). Hopefully you enjoyed. Usually I'd say something about sharing your own art, but I imagine we'll be hosting a mushroom themed art competition soon. So save it for then and wow us all.
