Favourite Local Pubs

I thought it might be fun to share notes on our favourite local pubs.  I'm going to split mine into two separate categories:  craft beer selection and international beer selection.

For craft beer, by far my favourite is a little pub just south of Calgary's downtown core called the Hop In Brew.  It's an old converted house, and is both rustic (read a little run down) and cozy inside.  Incredibly friendly staff, and a fantastic rotating selection of craft beers:

Just a few blocks from the Hop In Brew is Bottlescrew Bill's, which has a huge selection of international beers -- by far the largest selection I'm aware of in Calgary.  Much more of a typical pub feel to this one:

This pub has a passport program called Around the World in 80 Beers.  You have to make your way through 80 distinct beers within a year to get your name on the wall.  Lots of fun, some of us have been around the world a few times...

Incidentally, Bottlescrew Bill's is also attached to the restaurant (Buzzard's) that hosts Calgary's annual Testicle Festival.

What are your favourite local pubs?

Also, if you ever find yourselves in Vancouver, this pub does craft beer better than any other I've ever been to, including any (read many) of those I visited in Washington, Portland and Northern California.  If you can get in, that is:

Nice pictures! I want to go. I have some favorites but I have to search for pictures or obtain them. Good topic! I can't wait to see nice places to go.

Has anyone here been to (or is from) Portland?  I couldn't even begin to decide which of the many pubs I visited there to list.  I did quite enjoy Deschuttes' brew pub though, and went back a couple of times and then again in Bend.

A new craft beer pup/club is opening up quite close to where I work and is advertising an offering of over 100 beers on tap.

It will be interesting to see what they have to offer, both in terms of beer and atmosphere -- I will be sure to report back.

This is all I could find for images:

Off topic but... nice image. What did you use to grab it?

TheGrobe

Not sure what you mean.

wishiwonthatone

I assumed you took the picture?? If so what camera were you using?

TheGrobe

Oh, not at all -- google image search.

Well then, someone knew their business. :)

I promised to report back.  Mismanaged, awful service, mediocre food an asurprisingly high number of featured beers out at any given time.  Worse of all, we decided to hold a corporate event there and it was a disaster.  I won't be going back.

Mine is at the Fremantle's Sail & Anchor, here is the website.
At the back of the pub, they've got thier own mirco brewery. A little pricey but nice. Nice atmosphere, right in town, shoppings and markets.

some photos, see here

Well I didn't respond to this at first because to be honest I don't drink in pubs. I'm ALWAYS freakin disappointed. The glasses aren't rinsed well so the beer loses it's head instantaneously and has that 'yag' flavor that sticks to the back of your tongue and all too expected headache that follows, or the service sucks, or it's way too f'in loud, and on and on. OK - I admit it... I'm a curmudgeon.

BUT!

Before I semi-retired to take a great job in the HVAC industry, I was a marketing manager in a gian electronics company. I traveled constantly (and hated my life). Believe it or not, the best Guiness Stout I've had in the U.S. was at Nine Fine Isishmen in the New York New York casino in Las Vegas. It was perfectly pressurized, chilled, and was clean and delightful. I hate Las Vegas. I F"INHATLASVEGAS but if you find yourself trapped there, stop by and be surprised. Only place worth going in that dump.

Here's a picture, they actually disassembled a pub in Ireland and moved it to hell, I mean Las Vegas.

lol Laughing, yes me too I don't go to the pubs anymore.

TheGrobe

I do.

When I was a young lad (about 2000 years ago) I was discovering pubs and drinking for the first time in my life. There was a non-descript (no better way to describe it than 'non-descript') pub not far away. It had no outside lights. Inside was no music. There was one skuttle bowling game which no one ever played. The only feature was a long bar, bar stools, and a perpetual row of (what was to me at 18 years) old men. I always wondered why the demographic and the... uninviting atmosphere. Then I got married and had three daughters. When puberty hit on all three and menopause on the other... I got it.  Sorry in advance if this strikes you as a bit crude but there's an element of bitter-sweet truth to it. I don't visit such pubs today, but I do understand the need to get........out.
