Animal girls are one of the most iconic races among waifus. The race originated in the Shang dynasty more than 3000 years ago and remained popular till today. Catgirls, because of their perfect balance between cuteness and realism, became the single most popular species of animal girls. After the popularization of the internet, cat girls’ appearances in pop culture and internet memes boosted their popularity by a huge margin. In this era where catgirls reign, people started asking: “How do we make them real?”
There are currently two schools on the problem of realizing catgirls: the conservatives and the progressivists. The conservatives aim to utilize genetic modification technology to develop catgirls made out of flesh and blood, while the progressivists want to build cat girls androids powered by AI. The two methods have completely different pros and cons and the next paragraphs are going to look over them.
The main advantage of genetically modified catgirls is that they are completely organic and their human parts are indistinguishable from normal humans. However, there are two major shortcomings that make creating appealing gen-mod catgirls extremely difficult. First, the uncanny valley. Because of their unrealistic anatomy, anime-style catgirls fall right into the uncanny valley once brought into the real world. As for realistic catgirls, we already have cosplayers. Second, moral issues. Bringing drastically modified humans into the world will likely bring genetic diseases with them, this would cause a lot of moral issues and most countries would not allow this to happen.
As opposed to gen-mod catgirls, the main advantages of catgirl androids are that they look more appealing in real life and that they cause less, although not zero moral issues. But similar to gen-mod catgirls, catgirl androids also have some major drawbacks. First, with current technologies, we can’t make an AI with a similarly strong ability to reason like humans. A catgirl powered by modern AI is going to be much dumber than your average house cat. Second, they can’t be carbon-based. Their lack of blood and flesh will make their bodies feel unrealistic, which makes you want to cuddle with them less.
Because of the previous methods’ huge drawbacks, here I propose a third method that allows us to interact with catgirls: FullDive VR. Without needing to worry about limitations in the real world, FullDive VR can create the most appealing catgirls possible in an immersive VR world. Since we can modify the user’s sensories in any way, we can give the catgirls the looks of catgirl androids and the textures of gen-mod catgirls. We don’t need to worry about AI because catgirls can be completely player-controlled. Not only can you interact with catgirls, but you can also become a catgirl. The best part is, we don’t even need to worry about any moral issues since behind the catgirls are consenting users.
