Marseillais Chess (Double-Chess)

Hello guys,

I was surprised I couldn't find any discussion about the Marseillais chess (aka Double-move chess) variant which seems to have gained some popularity in the past. Feel free to delete this post if my search skills failed. 😇

A description of the variant (and its sub-variants) can also be found on Wikipedia and at The Chess Variant Pages. The first double-move chess variant seems to have appeared in the 1920s and 1930s in a local newspaper in Marseillais, although it's not quite clear who its authors were. Changes to the variant have been introduced later to solve some issues with the original ones.

Here's an extract of the rules:

  • Each player's turn consists of two moves, except when:
    • White is playing their first turn (Balanced sub-variant).
      • Castling is considered one move.
    • A player gives a check on the first move - they lose the second one.
  • Regarding checks:
    • If given a check, a player should move out of check on the first move of their next turn.
    • One cannot move into check, even if it's the first move and they move out of it on the second.
  • Regarding en passant capture:
    • If only one en passant capture during a turn is made, either:
      • It must be made on the first move of the turn (however, the second move can cause some ambiguity); or
      • It's allowed on the second move only of the turn (resolves that ambiguity but sounds like breaking the original en passant rule).
    • Two consecutive en passant captures in one turn are allowed.

Other double-move variants seem to exist that simply get rid of the idea of check and checkmate and the came is won at a King capture.

This looks like a very interesting variant! I would be very interested to see this added!

Very fascinating! I would love to play this with some skilled players.

The "2pc" high-rated players would be better at this, no?

JkCheeseChess

love the idea, but for now I think the devs'll stick to one-move per player type variants

anybody wants to play bughouse with me using discord?

You should probably either post that on the club notes, or in this club:

This variant of chess is practically dead these days. Yes, you can play it on Goldtoken, but few people play this chess. As a rule, all games are monotonous and boring. That is why almost no one plays Marseille chess.

This variant, a favourite of Alekhine's, is now implemented in Zillions: Marseillais Chess.
