Chaturanga may refer to:

  1. The four divisions of ancient Indian armies: infantry, elephants, cavalry and chariots.
  2. The ancient precursor of Chess; truly original rules are lost but several later variants are known, including Shatranj.
  3. Chaturaji, a version of the game for 4 players; a bit confusing but entrenched in some languages such as Spanish and Russian.
  4. A well-known ashtanga pose of yoga, complete name chaturanga dandasana, which means 'four limbed staff pose'.

The Chaturanga was played with dices.

samuelebeckis

Who knows... I think probably Chaturanga in its origin didn't use any dice. Ancient Chaturaji was surely played with dice though. Oblong barrel-dice giving four possible outcomes: 2, 3, 4, and 5; the latter could be intended as either 1 or 5, so allowing to move either a pawn or the King.

I know in Spanish literature the ancient Chaturaji is often called Chaturanga which is quite confusing, not totally wrong in the end as Chaturaji was a popular variant of Chaturanga...

I tend to think, but I guess it would be hard to prove, that Indians never established fixed rules for any of these games, kind of in every village you could find a slightly different variant. This Indian anarchy in Chess rules apparently has been surviving for very long time untill the modern age.

Limiting the discussion to the Chess context.

-o- Chaturanga is the Sanskrit name for Shatranj or the 'ancient' Shatranj in those countries -- including India -- where the Shatranj name is used as a synonym for Chess.

-o- In Spanish-speaking and Russian-speaking countries, however, Chaturanga refers to the ancient four-player variant, namely the 'ancient' Chaturaji.

Thanks to this double meaning of Chaturanga, our Club has always addressed both Shatranj enthusiasts and Chaturaji enthusiasts.

Eso fue en la India, era entre cuatro
Todos contra todos, o me busco un aliado
Chaturanga chaturanga chatu chatu chaturanga
Chaturanga chaturanga chatu chatu chaturanga

Amarillo y negro, contra verde y rojo
Todo el mundo juega, con un dado oblongo
Chaturanga chaturanga con un dado oblongo
Chaturanga chaturanga chatu chatu chaturanga
Chaturanga chaturanga con un dado oblongo

Chaturanga chaturanga chatu chatu chaturanga
Chaturanga chaturanga chatu chatu chaturanga
Chaturanga chaturanga chatu chatu chaturanga

In English:  Chaturanga -- meaning 'the ancient Chaturaji' in this case.

Chaturanga chaturanga everybody plays

That was a long time ago, now nobody plays. Uh! ... x2

Chaturanga chaturanga was played ... x2

That was in India, it was between four
All against all, or I find myself an ally
Chaturanga chaturanga chatu chatu chaturanga ... x2

Yellow and black, against green and red
Everybody plays, with an oblong die
Chaturanga chaturanga with an oblong die
Chaturanga chaturanga chatu chatu chaturanga
Chaturanga chaturanga with an oblong die

Chaturanga chaturanga [...]
