Here's a couple shots with ideas for a chess set:
The entities would need commands, but normal built sets would be cool.
Any other ideas? A playable chess set would be awesome!

NICE... still like chicken zombie as knight or maybe skeleton spider as queen... but those are neat...
Here's a lineup for a living chess set which I have considered:
White(passive/neutral mobs):
Rooks: Iron golems(a must, given their size)
Knights: Foals fit the bill (0.7 blocks long mean that they fit on the board)
Bishops: Zombie pigmen! Their human-size and neutrality, as well as general uniqueness, makes them a good candidate for a bishop.
King: The player, obviously... For a vanilla stand-in, maybe an enderman?
Queen: I like snow-golems for the queen. Their range attacks and large size (relatively) make them seem like queens to me.
Pawns: Villagers. Perfect footmen!
Black(Hostile mobs):
Rooks: Creepers. I always thought rooks should have explosive capabilities.
Knights: Jockeys of some sort. Chicken jockey (zombie + chicken) would be my first pick, but a spider jockey could do the job.
Bishops: Blazes. Their strangeness and unique movement makes them surrogates of bishops.
King: Hard one! I'd think a wither skeleton (or the wither itself, if you're feeling generous) is a good candidate: Tall, regal, and most importantly, dangerous.
Queen: Normal skeleton. Range attacks and human-size makes them good candidates for a queen.
Pawns: Zombies, as the opposites of villagers.
I'd be glad to see other chess sets! Or perhaps one could build their set in-game, and display a screenshot?
That sir is an awesone line up... perhaps for black Queen a Witch... its a bit of a gender bender however...
how would you design a minecraft chess set?
white squares oak , black bedrock
zombie ridden chickens as knights, sunflower pawns,... ect . ect ... What do you think would be apt...
