I remember this game from Kasparov's book analyzing the match. Those were the longest 20 pages ever!

By the way, didn't Karpov win earlier in the match (this may be the preceding "Moscow Marathon" I'm recalling) in a Ruy Lopez game?

TheSteadyHand

yes Karpov won the first match after several draws but kasparov wasn't happy and beat him the next three games

Yeah, it was better than Rocky lol. I also recall Kasparov saying that around that same time Karpov was dabbling in the Petroff Defense and chose Nc6 in must-win situations where complications could play to his advantage.

i haven't heard that i haven't got a chance to study those 20pgs yet but i will, and i don't doubt it tho karpov had a special nack for getting out of tough situations
