SNAKES & LADDERS

Last summer I went on several day trips to Leeds visiting a quaint little WMC, where chess was played. They had this brilliant thing called a chess ladder, where players challenged each other.

I was wonderring if we could have something similar. Trouble is how do we challenge each other on live chess?

Mr_Bump

I think we'd need to challenge via a message and agree a time to play. When on 'Live Chess', there's a tab to view friends who are currently live and a challenge can be made. It, of course, hinges on being 'friends' with all of your opponents...

ReddersP

I know what you mean but when Rekorts was playing LIVE today, I couldn't view his game, or find his player name off the list of members in the live section whereas I have been able with other members.  Perhaps Rekorts has setting somewhere making him private in live games?

Also, should the ladder be for two differing time limits, the standard of play for each member differs from the time contrainsts.

Pete, it's rekorts. Could be problems all round(I'm a numbty with these settings) but if enough people want to give it a try could be fun. Seems to me if I play Americans or Phillipinos they go off line with a minute to go and come back with ten.

ReddersP

Yep, Ive never been on an online site yet where cheating has been part of the game for some players.  Thats why I don't subscribe.

rekorts

Getting back to the point, I think we need an electrician who understands these things.

I can't afford to fly to the Philippines to acuse someone of cheating, but with YOBS' I could hire a private detective (with a bicycle) to keep a check,  mate!

rekorts

John, as far as time thing goes could members enter 3 different disciplines, their choice. I really wouldn't want to play bullet at my age( though I still have a soft spot for Ali McGraw).

rekorts

Does anybody have any thoughts on the problems, my solution is throw it at John(Mr Bump) but somehow I feel that unfair, so maybe we give it a week or so and see who wants to play.

ReddersP

My thought is, it would be nice to have a Chess ladder.

rekorts

Me too. Anymore?

Mr_Bump

A ladder would be good... If you want me to run it Dennis, I'll put my thinking cap on regarding making it work as easily as possible. As far as Pete's comment goes, how about 5, 15 & 30 minute games?

ReddersP

Yeah, that sounds about right.  Its not often I get more than 1 hour of piece (pun intended) and quiet in this madhouse, so I would say 30 mins being the longest time limit.

rekorts

I was thinking ladders could be divided into sections, A,BC D etc thus making it easier to update. The number in each section would depend on how far up the ladder a player is allowed to challenge.

Mr_Bump

Numbers aren't a problem Dennis, it's a matter of: 1. somebody (probably me...) collating results on a regular basis so there's an up to date ladder to view and... 2. how long people want to play for.

I have another idea, but I just need to think about it a bit while I'm asleep...

Mr_Bump

... and, by the way, Tony does such a decent job running the ladder at the east Leeds WMC, maybe he'd like to take the lead on this?

rekorts

I think if we had sections players could update as they played. We don't want to put a lot of work on one individual.

Mr_Bump

That would be a relief!

I've been looking at my stats. I think 15& 30 mins are both classed as Standard. Maybe we should have 5,10 & 30. Though I'm not sure what 5 mins is classed as.

How do we get the last comment to go to top?

ReddersP

I agree 30 mins for standard  (or rapidplay if you like)

and 5 mins or 10 mins ( for Blitz)

Is 1 min bullet Chess and 10 secs per move lightning Chess?

rekorts

I was thinking of the titles given by chess.com. I know 10m is Blitz, 15 and above is Standard. I'm not sure what qualifies as Bullit.

I was thinking if we used a forum page per section they would be titled eg;

STANDARD Section A or BLITZ SectionD etc.

If a section contained five players challenges would be allowed 5 places up the ladder.

Thus B1 could challenge anyone in A section, C2 could all up to B2, D3 to C3 etc.

If we could get the last posting to the top of the page, challenges would be easier.
