After e4 e5 Qh5 black is pretty much lost. What are some other openings like this?

JkCheeseChess

Qh5 is a legit line with jump@h7 Rxh5 jump@h2 Rxh5 Qf6 and something like freeze@g7 Rxe5+ and its probably better for black but it's still a fun line nonetheless

No, h8 rook can jump over h pawn to take queen

learned this the hard way

Exactly, with proper knowledge of the spells and opening theory Black can pretty easily defend against a lot of "scholar's mate" type moves

g6, then Bb5 still wins I think?

Edit: No it doesn't, freeze bishop and Bb4
Edit 2: Also didn't see #2, which is massive

Freezing spell is actually lacking on the offensive side; say you have this position:

freeze@c8 and Bxc6 does not win a knight, as black will counter with freeze@d5 and Nf6, proceeding to capture the bishop on the next turn.

Fire

black has a lot of counterplay with that line though

Nah, after Rxe5 Black counters with freeze@d4 and d6.

why is everyone talking about freeze

Jumping h pawn then capturing queen is clearly better

ah, so that's how jumping works

Nah, after Rxe5 Black counters with freeze@d4 and d6.

...and gets mated with Bb5#

Nc6 is better but even then theres some tricky lines there

Chessisfunforme

never play the scandinavian.

I find the englund gambit to be nearly unstoppable

i mean if you play 1. d4 then you're just giving your opponent a free win

How?

amrugg

Don't accept the Englund gambit then.

I find that if black responds with either e6 or e5 and I freeze@c7 and play Bb5 there are very few moves black can play that don't loses on the spot due to me threatening Qh5 with the double threat of jumping the pawns with both my bishop and queen on the next move. I think Ke7 or g6 are the only options for black that don't lead to immediate checkmate.

JkCheeseChess

e4 e5 is a forced loss for black

JkCheeseChess

g6 doesn't work because of Qh5 anyway and there's a jump threat as well as Qxe5

What line?

JkCheeseChess

e4 e5 Bb5 Ke7 is the only way for black to "survive"

The only other option is freezing the bishop followed by g6. Just freezing the bishop and playing a random move leads to Qh5 with a jump king capture threat on two sides; neither can be stopped. And obviously not freezing the bishop loses to jump@d7 Bxe8#.

So after freezing the bishop and g6, White will still play Qh5. Black cannot capture the queen because the bishop jump threat still exists. So then black plays c6 or Nc6, but either way White just plays Qxe5+ and Black is lost. If Nc6 was played, Black cannot capture the queen because the bishop is "pinning" it to the jump threat that was blocked a move ago, and Black can't freeze anything because he is still in cooldown.

Ke7 instead of g6 prevents the forced mate but I would rather not play into such a terrible position

e6 is much better but it's still definitely worse for Black.

What about freeze@b5 and Bb4 after Bb5?
