uh you mean you could promote your knight in the fried liver when your knight took the rook?
Variant idea: ALL pieces can promote

If it goes to the 8th rank, yes.

no way that just ruins the strategy completely
I agree. That's why I said "I don't like this idea"

rook to last rank promo to queen is op
Pretty much every piece is overpowered if it can promote except for the pawn

queens should be able to promo to knight, that would make some interesting tactics... What if you remove promo to queen and require that you promote

I could do that. No more promoting to queens makes it a bit better

if u like all pieces promote, u can play shogi.
I literally said that I don't like the idea

In Shogi, pieces "promote" when they move to a square in the further-back ranks but promotion is optional in many cases, and it's fixed what they promote to. When a rook reaches the end, it can also move one square diagonally, and when a bishop promotes it can move one square sideways thus obtaining the other colour. You only get one of each such piece and most of the most common pieces to promote to is the Gold which has less moving power than the king as they can't move diagonally backwards.
Shogi is like Crazyhouse in that you can drop pieces in. You can drop into the last few ranks too but you have to also move the piece back there to get it promoted. Pawns capture the same way they move and you can only have one pawn in any file.
All pieces can promote when they reach the 8th rank, except kings and queens
Edit: To make pieces less overpowered, no promoting to queens (so rooks also can't promote)
Personally, I don't like this idea, but what do you think?
