I assume that you are looking for the concepts and basic "how to's" rather than the latest wrinkles in theory. For that purpose, Neil McDonald's "Mastering the French" is a good intro based on the pawn structures that arise in the French Defense. Unfortunately, it is out of print, so I'm sure that used copies are expensive. Other books with good sections on how to play French pawn structures are "Pawn Structure Chess" by Andrew Soltis and "Chess Structures: A Grandmaster Guide" by Mauricio Flores Rios. Both are readily available and very helpful.

Yes.  Mastering the French by Neil McDonald is a good book,  And yes it is out of print and copies are now very expensive...

However Neil McDonald has written another book, introduction to the French Defense, targeted to the improving chess amateur which I highly recommend, as he does a superb job of explaining the themes, plans, strategies, why's and wherefore's of the moves, etc.  Curiously, the title of the book, which deals exclusively with the French Defense, does not contain the word 'French'...

Wolfgang Uhlman, Winnjng w the French and or Simon Williams, Attacking Chess, The French. I have about 15 books on the French. Those 2 are excellent for learning some of key ideas. Mastering the French is also excellent.

And the suggestion Russ made re How to Play against e4 is a good one. I don’t love some of the lines, but it’s a very well written book.

There's lots of lines, variations to choose from!

By the way.  I have 28 books on the French, including Mastering the French by Neil McDonald and Simon Williams' book that you mentioned.  But for someone essentially starting out in the French, Neil McDonald's later book is about as good as it gets (IMO).

I agree. How to play against 1e4 is very good. And you would never know that is a French Defense book unless you look inside.

There's an abundance of French Defense resources out there. First one that got me into it was GM Simon Williams' excellent video series here on chess.com. He also has a book on it. Then I started expanding into other books and videos.
