chessmaster 10th edition not working on window 10.

Hey guys I just bought chessmaster 10th edition and was enjoying it until I upgraded to windows 10. Now my game doesn't work. I really want to keep windows 10 but everytime I clicked play nothing happened and I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and it wouldn't reinstall. I kept getting an error at the very end. I really love chessmaster and I hope somebody can help me fix this so I can continue studying the art of chess.

I don't have any ideas, but what was the error message?

Shyvic

I got it reinstalled and I think if I can find a way to skip the opening video it would work. It gets to where its supposed to play it and that's where it just doesnt do anything.

Shyvic

Nevermind I got the error again. It is error 1628 failed to complete installation. :/

Omega_Doom

Hi. Have you tried compatible mode?

I did what the link said Ronald and I'm pretty sure I got it installed finally but I still have the problem where I click on it, then pick the settings but after I pick the setting nothing happens. The game never starts.

Shyvic

Yes I tried the compatibility troubleshooter and it didn't do anything.

It might be worth your while to ask for help on the Ubisoft Chessmaster 10 forum. On the Chessmaster 11 forum, the moderator claims to have installed CM11 on a Windows 10 tech preview. Maybe he can help you with CM10.

Thanks for posting this - I JUST tried the exact same thing and got the same results.  It wouldn't work.  I couldn't get it to install.  I tried the admin role (I already was), compatibility troubleshooter, the whole works.  Nothing.  Bummer.  By the way, are they EVER going to make another Chessmaster?  C'mon Ubisoft Bucharest(?), help us out here! Frown

Update: just talked to OP who found a thread on this in the CM forum over at Ubisoft where they say there is a solution.  Follow this link and it will take you there.

My CM became non-responsive after every move for 10+ seconds. Disabling Windows Defender of CM folders helped.

Go here for a look. It will set up CM 9000 on a win 10 computer. Site was checked by Norton, however as ALWAYS, for every down load site, I would advise checking with more than one site checker.  https://www.old-games.com/download/6808/chessmaster-9000  Slight fee required if I read the page correctly.

Solution:
In case anyone ends up here and still needs a fix,
Install this as admin http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

If it still doesn't work or if the installation of Dx9 failed in first place, go to the CD and into the "Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition" folder, then into the "Support" folder, and then "DirectX9" folder.
Now try those archives one by one by copying the dll file from inside each of them and paste it in the game installation folder and try running the game. Start with the archives that end with 86 rather than 64 , for me the april 2007 worked. If you had to try the 64 ones, then before doing that remove the 86 ones you copied earlier or change their name before copying the 64 ones.
If it still doesn't work go to the properties of Chessmaster's executable and run the compatibility troubleshooter.

Still doesn't work? Just install a bloody virtual machine damn it!..

I've literally gone through a minefield of issues trying to get my game installed. I finally figured out what my issues were. The error I was getting is Error 1628 Failed to Install. In order to clear that, you need to dump your C:\Windows\Temp directory. Something in the temp folder was creating the issue. Once it finished, I found compatibility mode to be a big issue also. CMX plays on Windows 10 without compatibility mode. Sometimes it will automatically install the game.exe on the drive in compatibility mode and it just won't run. If you dig into the C;\Programs Files (86x)\Ubisoft\Chessmaster 10th Edition\game.exe and clear the compatibility settings, it works just fine.

I thought I'd post my recent attempts in case it might help someone. In the last few days, I decided to try to install Chessmaster 9000 and 10th Edition onto a Windows 10 Pro box that I have. My posts regarding these installs are in this thread: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/software-chess-simulators

My install of CM 9000 went fairly smoothly (it does require DirectPlay to be enabled, though); However, my install of CM 10 was eating my lunch until I realized that I had to disable Windows Defender before installing CM 10. I followed the general guidance of KHollister at this link (Post #4 dated 08-01-2018): https://forums.ubisoft.com/showthread.php/1793152-chessmaster-10-on-Windows-10

P.S. - @Nimzowitts, that old-games link looks interesting; If I didn't already have a legal copy of CM 9000, I might have been tempted to try it on a test box. Was anyone adventurous enough to try it?

There are updates to install and then run it in admin mode.

Yep, the patches are important - Not only bug fixes, but one of those CM 10 patches does away with the periodic CD check nag.

Yeah, forgot about that.

I got it working okay, and I'm not that great with computers. Just a matter of searching around for info.

It does crash (Fritz never does for example), but it's very rare.

Good heavens! I LOVE CM 9000 far better than ANY other version. O wise one! HOW did you get CM 9000 to work?? I tried EVERYTHING I Could! Yes the "old-games link looks interesting; " did indeed install CM 9000 however some features would still not work.
