I don’t know, I have a very interesting metal chess set I bought about 40 years ago, it was several hundred then.
This set looks amazing. What is it made of?
I found out and updated my post. It's crushed stone and resin. I thought it was going to be plastic.
the ones made by franklin mint go on ebay for 750 to 1,000. but they are made of pewter. so the ones you show should be way less than that.
Thanx y'all. I saw 750 and 800 browsing on the web but as an investment those prices are too high. If the average were at least 1200-1500 it might be worth it.
i seriously look down on anything made of resin, unless it's kind of encased in resin to protect something worth protecting. i get really mad when our local trading site calls chess sets marble, but really it's just ground up marble and resin.
very prolific.
I don't really like themed chess sets or any made out of anything but wood.
Saying that me and my husband years and years ago used to make the Isle of Lewis chess sets and board. It was more of a hobby although we sold quite a few.
We never made one for ourselves though and wish we would have done now 🥰

i thought i read that the isle of lewis style of pieces were the second most popular behind staunton.
QueenClaudia--- My Lewis set is unmarked. The box label says "made in England---a pepper pastime". Did you and your husband make this set? I bought it in 1984 at the Village Chess Shop in New York.
I like wood sets that look like common chess pieces. Even if I don't use it, with a nice board it's always a nice piece of furniture. I saw this set for sale locally and was wondering if it was worth considering. I'm now thinking it's not worth it.
A Google search reveals that one sold for $127 about ten years ago.

No, we were never serious makers of chess sets just a couple of young adults making them for fun although the date would be about right strangely enough. Maybe not that strange as we possibly chose that set to make because it was popular at the time.
We lived in a flat in trendy Lark Lane in Liverpool at the time. Brings back a lot of happy memories 😊.

I'd go with what you like but for me nothing like wooden sets. They are so tactile as well.

the actual pieces that were dug up on the isle of lewis were made from walrus ivory. im guessing that is illegal now.
I dont know the history of the set that's really interesting.
well i think that is a pretty cool hobby that you and your husband came up with. why did you quit? was it not lucrative enough for the effort?
I once saw an advertisement for a set that was supposedly from woolly mammoth tusks. It was priced at something like 12,000 or 14,000 usd. With something like that it seems too much of a chance of fraud because there'd be no way to know BEFORE it was bought. And BEFORE it's bought is the key part of the whole deal.

Yes it took so long to make each chess set and the boards were very difficult to do. It just wasn't cost effective in the end but we had fun for a while 🙂
1979 JRR Tolkien Lord of the Rings Chess Set - Very Rare.
This is the ad and the seller wants 1,000 usd for it. Here are some other pictures.
So what do y'all think? I don't know how to put a value on a set like this, I figured somebody on here might have some expertise in sets like this.
I looked up a few similar sets and it's made of crushed stone and resin. The prices were 750 and 800 but there were slight damage like chipped horns, etc.
