Ebony and rosewood chess set... Your opinion?

Ok. What do you guys think of chess sets where white pieces are represented by rosewood and black are ebony? Good, bad? Talking about expensive fancy sets here. Is it good idea to buy one like that or is it a bad taste?

The knights are supercool. Gorgeous pieces, finishes. The rosewood is perhaps a little too dark for me. Im getting old, I need a little more contrast. But that wouldnt stop me from buying it (and spending more than I should), and whipping it out on special occasions, and complaining when my opponent/guest was too rough/clumsy with his pieces.

Thank you for the reply. Anyone else? happy.png

i thinks the set looks really good.  I personally like darker pieces and knights that are a little over the top with detail.  I would love to buy a set like that but theyre always pricey.

It's a beautiful set and if you can afford it, I say buy it. One of the most pleasurable experiences when playing OTB is playing with a beautiful set. I wouldn't play blitz with it and I'd make sure my opponent played with the respect such a set deserves.

Its always confused  me why  people  who  know  nothing or little  about  chess, spend  so  much money  on elaborate  chess sets  and boards. To my eye  the  set  you have  displayed are  beautiful! Anyone  will recognize them as  a Chess set.

The rosewood color and grain pattern is awesome...quite striking really. But the Knight design looks like it would throw me..... and bite me on my way down....lol

My opinion is that the contrast just isn't enough for reasonably fast piece identification.

However...

I recently found a chess set that I completely LOVED the designs of all the pieces, so I bought the Ebony version.  I then decided that I also really liked the Bud Rosewood version of the same set, so I bought it too... then I realized after I had both sets "in hand" that if I wanted to, I could play the Ebony and Rosewood pieces against each other for a completely different third set! happy.png

Haven't done that yet... but I'm sure I'll get around to it some day.  The lack of contrast just bugs me somehow...

Thanks for opinions, everybody.

Knights are the main reason I fell in love with this chess set. I absolutely love the way they look. The ebony and rosewood combo make it even more special/fancy.

I'm not too worried for the contrast issue. If I get this set, I will only play it on occasions and with no time control. For me, it is more of an art piece. And playing the game with this set is to complement a good conversation and to appreciate the craft of an artist.

My opinion is bud rosewood is considered to be of much higher quality than normal rosewood and usually available in high-end chess pieces. It is also found in some chess boards too. I guess this is chessbazaar's pegasus edition chess set. These kind of luxury chess sets are best suited for décor as well as for occasional play. You can use this chess sets as a centerpiece of your home. Secondly these combinations will look stunning in the bright lit rooms unlike boxwood. If you are planning to buy this chess set, I think this is the right time they are offering extra 20% off on it.

I like rosewood more. It's just a thing of beauty happy.png

Why did this resurface 7 years later lol?

Yes, although beautiful, my eyes need more contrast.
