Did you end up going?

Too easy to cheat these days at the big-money tournaments.

I'll stick to the little G/15's, G/30's, until they figure out a solution.

If that means you went, did you play K-12 championship? How did you do?

Do many people there really cheat OTB?

I would have thought the consequences would be too great... it's not like you can make a sockpuppet IRL...

I doubt anyone cheats, it's a scholastic tournament, and I don't believe it even has a prize fund, only scholarships to the top 3.

To get top 3 in a tournament like that takes about 2400+ strength, and I believe the 2400+'s won. I doubt there was any major cheating.

U1600 went undefeated (+3,=4,-0)Smile the only cheating that was done was that people over 1600 rated going into the tournament were allowed into the U1600 section and similar cases in other sections.

Better than me, +2 -3 = 2 in the top section. Played horribly, but still gained a measly 3 rating points. I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad sign.

One of my good friends, and students I serve to coach as an assistant coach won 1st place in the unrated highschool section at this tournament. I am very proud to say I helped him. He has made a lot of progress imo this year. His name is Aaron Willer.

cool he'll always be rembered then since this was a record breaking tournament he won in =).

@shepi: dude had I known you were there we could have trained together between rounds helped with opening prep etc... I had 2 1600 players to help me prepare between rounds but we kept getting lost in the hotel (too big) and when one of us were done with a round the other 2 were playing still so I couldnt utilise those to at all lol. The first day I got there  (traveld with a team of 30 or so kids) me and my 3 room mates didnt get a hotel room till 9pm Undecided (got there by 2pm thursday) so all that time the 3 of us could have played eachother we couldnt just because I didnt have my room that was such a frustrating first day.

Oh all though it was a sideline tournament one of my 1600 sparring partners won the friends/family tournament outright Smile (U1700 section I believe) it sucks that wasnt rated cause if it was I'd be back at this event next year just to play in it. I could have done a lot better had I managed my time better because I had a slight or better advantage in everygame (except the last it stayed even all the way through) I drew all my games with the slight edge (all games as black) and won all games where I had more of a advantage (all games as white excpet the last game) I got into ridiculously time trouble I think at one point or another I always ended up being 30 or 40 minutes behind on time !!!

I think your friend tied with my fellow assistant coach, and friend Mohammad Askari hehehe, the prize was like a large gift card to the chess book store. He bought Mayhem in the Morra, a must read if you want to learn new attacking chess...and by attacking..i mean seizing the initiative.

LOL now that I think about it I didnt use much of my resources at all. Thos being not sending my games to my coach between rounds (2000 rated coach) although there was this FM that I became friends with who analyzed one of my games free of charge and even gave me some personal opening prep of his agains the Alapin Sicilian and gave me his e-mail so he could send any new notes as long as I asked free of chargeSmile if I had to chose between this new benefiting friendship and a higher placed trophy I'd chose the sooner without think so I left pretty happy

yeah he talked about losing to a 1400 in round 2 then winning the rest even beating someone 1700 was that your friend

I drew my first game against a 1400 Cry. Hung a piece, to a simple tactic under some extremely mild time pressure (about 8 mins).

chessmaster102

Still very nice aggressive surprised he played 1...e5 in such a event. Mistakes happen just learn to grow from them

Abhishek2

wow how did that 1400 miss that fork

btw it's ok last yr second round I was 1700 drew with a 1300 was dominating but hung a piece and had to settle for checking, and he played the wrong king moves, he should move his king back not forward, so I held the draw.

I definitely had the craziest attacking chess game last year at nationals...i lost my first round game in dreadful fashion, and i won my second round game...

2nd day is when it happened. Im paired with an 1890 guy or something, and we go for very sharp play...there was piece cover at the end for my king....not a single pawn protecting me...and we both basically have all of our pieces on, both of us with tattered pawn structures, i sacked so many pawns and he did too...much to complicated for me. the computer evaluation kept changing dramatically every move. Clearly we were patzers, but it was a blast of a game.

Abhishek2

I did very well last year had a great win against a 1950 from NY

it was an attacking game and I got to sac my queen twice (he resigned after the second sac). His pieces were tied down and miserable it was pure torture for him.
