I think @SeniorPatzer makes an interesting question. Seconded by @isabela14. I'm 29 and i just started playing seriously about 6 months ago. The age when you start learning also plays a big role on your learning curve.
Usually if you are gifted and if your dad start to train you around 8 and with coach like Alexandra Botez,you can get to 2050 Elo in 7 years!
500 - 1700 live chess rating and 800 - 2600 puzzle rating in 1 year for me
1700 here is 1550 Elo.
In one years it's great!
The reason I want to know is the following: I know that giving chess lessons would be a fun source of income. I've seen some players start coaching when they are rated around 2000. How long would it take someone to get there? And if I may offer a follow up question, how high can your rating get without professional coaching?
In my country there is two level of coach for beginners.....level one you read a book of 600 pages from two russian coach(a GM and an IM) and you go pass the exam.
coach level two you just need to be at least 1500 Elo by our chess federation.
Those are the two level of certified coaching to teach in school etc....
It is hard to determine that and it is different for everyone depending on how much you put into it and what stage of development your brain is in if it is and your talents.
Maintaining a rating consistently for a duration and then advancing I feel is the way to go. Doing that depends on the individual. You get better playing stronger players.

For me it was closer to a year for 1200, 2 years for 1500, 3 years for 1800. If I can get to 2000 in a year and a half I'd be thrilled
For me to give you an idea I started at 900 went up to 1300 in a few months sat there for about three months touched 1400 went back down to about 1380 and then I went up to 1500 about a month later then another month to 1600 and another to 1760 about and I reckon I will hit 1800 very soon. I think I went up the rating ladder slower than other people though.

In general, you just need to love chess and be dedicated to studying.

With master-level coaching (on a regular basis), a beginning player might reach 2200+ in five years or so.
Without master-level coaching, it's hard to say how long improvement might take, because those who try to do it on their own usually follow no actual lesson plan or study regimen. But it's safe to say that self-taught players will take much longer to reach 2200+. Some might never reach it.

But you must get a favorable position so you can have tactical threats. They have a favorable position, and cash out by using tactical threats to get a positional advantage.

I went from 500-600 to 1000-1100 in 90 days.. I'm hoping on breaking 1200 soon..
I think it will take me 120 days to break 1400-1500 and about a year to become a 1700-1800 chess player! I hope in 1.5 -3 years to be around 2000!
