Hello,

I am a noob and would like to improve my game. I've got Deep Rybka 3 and Fritz 11.

Could you suggest the best way to improve my game using these?

chessmaster is much better for players of your standard, contains more video lessons for your level.

Skwerly

I suggest studying a GM game database.  Check this article out:

Ouch. Let me give you a quick translation: "So you've just spent $120 on chess software? You bought the wrong thing! Spend another $40."

Thanks very much indeed for your recommendations. I acquired Chessmaster XI and am going through it.

Any suggestions for books that I could read? My objective is to help my teen (rated ~850) improve as rapidly as possible in the next 2 years - preparing him for Univ.

My personal recommendation would be to stick with Chessmaster for the time being. It's a much more beginner friendly than Fritz. I don't have any experience with Rybka, but as much of a beast as it's supposed to be, I wouldn't expect it to be much easier for a beginner.

Chessmaster will get you started well, and then you can move on to one of the others.
