1914 St. Petersburg (Repro) Chess Pieces

It’s rotation day for me and I pulled out a set that I purchased over a year ago. I posted about it in my Five Knights thread - I think - but I thought it worthy of a little thread if it’s own.
It’s from the House of Staunton, beautifully carved and finished with broad bases and wonderfully well weighted. A very playable set. The dark side is Anjun wood - which has a lovely chocolate colour and a superb grain. The design is very simple but elegant. At least, that’s what I think.
The service from HoS both pre and post sale was excellent / they promptly replaced a faulty knight without any quibble or hassle. All very good. Anyway - a different set to ponder. These photos are from a year ago and then today… I can’t remember what I paid but it was on special/sale, and I thought good value.

There’s not a set schedule for me… just when the urge takes - I might read something that makes me think of a different era and off I go to find something … it might just be that I can’t shake a work thought and need a break and I’ve already been for a run … perhaps my wife is doing one of her hobbies or reading a book and I’ll tinker with some sets… this rotation was interesting in that when I purchased this set - a year or so back - I did not have that board (which I got second hand when I purchased that strange festive set with flying horses and strange rooks… ) I was pretty happy with the match actually. As I have a number out at any one time - each set probably stays out for a few months.

I really need to get out my camera and start taking some photos.  I have many sets that I have never mentioned in the forums.  Hopefully I can get away from the rather strict training I have been doing lately and get some photos up.  I have been doing the recommended books from the Chess Dojo course.  Btw Powder, your set is very nice indeed.  And seeing yours has caused me to bookmark yet another HoS page.  tongue

Got one in ebonised for the nostalgia.  Really nice set.

Having watched a wonderful video today that showed a Brazilian collector with the original of this set - I thought I’d re-surface this lovely reproduction.

@Powderdigit I took a look at this on HoS and was wondering if this was the regular anjan, or the lacquered set, as their photos make the unlacquered set look much lighter. I mention this because I have looked at other sets they have featuring anjan wood, but almost all are out of stock. It sesms that anjan, much like good ebony, is in short supply. However, the lacquered anjan set is still available. Just wondered if yours was lacquered or unlacquered. Still lovely either way.

Hi PDX. The set I purchased is not lacquered. The buff finish is one the best I have - the feel and look is wonderful. At least to my hands and eyes. The Anjun wood grain is beautiful.

Beautiful!

My tastes are evolving - I have always liked these pieces but I remember questioning the simplicity of the knights … not that I disliked them, rather I wanted something more … and yet, now that doesn’t exist. I look at that last photo and admire the restraint in the kights and the way the light plays to the simple curves. Once again, I use my oversized board and I am enjoying the space on that too!

This is a really nice set. I have always felt this design flew under the radar but was truly a subtle gem

Cheers 🍻. I’m with you. It’s the subtle features that make the set. The slender stems, the way the turrets on the rook are shaped, the lop-sided mitre, the double-sided mane in the knights … all quite lovely.

To me this set somehow represents east meets west - no one would mistake it for a Staunton design - but it’s clearly not Soviet either.
Royalty but not western? "Tsarist"? The king lacks a cross but the bishop has a mitre…
