I like the rooks...and the pawns look really strong.
1930s Horn McCrillis C-430 American chess set. Photoshoot time!

Thanks guys, I think it has an understated, modernist style to them. Shoot, I should've paid more attention in art history class.

Yeah, I haven't come across many chess sets with a simple thin crucifix atop the King like this. Many are thick, ornate or decorative cross finials. It's a nice change in the rotation.

I think the entire board, pieces and clock has a really has a very nice 90s type of vibe going on. Where did you be the M. Night Shyamalan board from?

@KineticPawn Was the 90s NOT the best decade ever? Come on now, brother. Hah!
The board was purchased from Etsy seller Jim Andson. The playing surface is ultra smooth with this beautiful satin sheen to it. I'm sure it's time consuming.

I specifically requested "lively grain" for the cherry.
Here is a vintage, mid-size 3.375" (85mm) KH set I've been using as my daily study set in rotation. Made by the Horn McCrillis company in the 1930s right here in the good ol' USA. The 1930s in America was the time of the Great Depression. Imagine telling your wife you're going out to buy a new chess set during the Great Depression. Duck and run for cover!
Each piece has an overall slim form. High double collars and small unassuming heads. With "humble" looking Knights. I love the simple cross atop the King piece.
The custom board is 12" (30cm) with 1.5" (38mm) squares. Solid maple and Brazilian cherry (Jatoba). Vertical grain going towards the opponent. Nice and compact to set-up next to my keyboard while I work without it getting in the way. Made by Jim Andson in southern Oregon.
Enjoy the photos.
Wait, what just happened? M. Night Shyamalan plot twist alert!!
