Yenster1 Yes & the transistors radio , Funny how chess , radio , vinyl , cinema then video , left it's impact on Us so many year's back

@lighthouse I remember that I used to ride my bike to a lone radio station, to see the source of the music of my transistor radio. It was like a scene from 'Oh brother where art thou', a very small building in the middle of nowhere, with a huge antenna.

Yeah, takes us back.

Dearest DKW,

It will remain a mystery that "Only The Shadow Knows". Deal with it! Nobody cares and I don't purposely lie. Put it to rest already.....There's other things to talk about. Both of us (mostly you) are completely inconsequential to this community. Actually, I am too. It is the way it is.

I shut off the computer and "you" go away.

Enjoy your night.

Thank you to those who commented on my dilemma with the Dubrovnik knight from RCM. I appreciate your help very much.

Yenster1

@magictwanger As I suspected... it's not 'the' reason.

Yenster1

It seems the light bulb hasn't lit up just yet.

Yenster1

The question is actually 'Why would you think he's lying?' ... hence the video on 'articles' as it directly relates to magictwanger's statement that begins with "A reason...". It seems most people would consider such consequential attacks from such a faux pas deserves an apology (and rightly so). So why not just take a few minutes to fully understand the video, make an apology to magictwanger, and just move on.

magictwanger

Good God DKW! I sincerely feel sorry for you! Honestly, I really mean that!

I don't know whether you are an adolescent or an adult. Your non stop rantings and crazy wild attacks on my supposed intentional lying is typical of someone who's gone off the rails and possibly lost a screw at some point......You can have "any" last words you like, if it makes you feel better.

If it makes you feel good (God...this is so silly) thinking I somehow supported some chess conspiracy to "lie" about what's going on in the industry, or how it all somehow relates to my chess set purchases, so be it. Regardless of what I may have said in the past, I don't see why I'd lie about something intentionally......Dude! Lighten up!

P.S......I really feel sorry for you, for being wired the way you are. "That is not a lie".

Go find another subject to torture us about. I'm done attempting to analyze you.

As the OP, can I please ask that we all get back to the topic at hand. None of this is fun or courteous- nor is it on the topic that I started the thread to discuss.

Hi Powder, thanks for your post. It helped me decide to purchase the pieces. In short, I really like them and they offer good value for money, though there is room for improvement.

I chose the unweighted pieces, as I always do, and found them to be well-balanced and stable. Overall, there are only a few things I would change about the set, both on a macro and micro level.

On a macro level, first, the mahogany-stained pieces look nice, but I can't shake the feeling that the stain might come off at some point (a constant worry about stained pieces thanks to my experience with the original World Chess Championship set, haha). I’m not sure how well they’d hold up in blitz games. Second, the pieces are a bit chubbier than the original. While they look nice, they would be more elegant if they followed the original proportions.

On a micro level, the carving of the Knight is good but could be more refined. To be fair, though, even Noj’s knights lack the subtleties of the original Jakopovic sets.

Getting back to the OPs original post here and I am not without throwing grenades at idiots myself, but this is not the place to be petty. Sorry Powder I could not resist.

Looking at the subtle differences in the Noj Dubrovnik 1950s set and RCM, I have to say that my squeaky Scottish pocketbook would open up for the RCM set. Back when the original post " Review of Noj Dubrovnik 1950", I was intrigued by the style of the set but not the price. Not to diminish NOJ and the craftmanship and if you can afford the price then it would be a set to cherished.

I like the dark rich mahogany red stained pieces on the RCM set. It gives it class. Also, I would have no reservations taking the RCM set out of the house to play with friends.

The RCM set (unweighted) in a felt/cloth bag with a tournament size silicone board in it is my travelling set for when I want a good size set that packs small and light.

And I also got the RCM Dubrovnik folding board. 57mm squares is perfect - a lovely combination for playing at home.

I have always liked those French wood roll up boards. A lot of times they came with smaller Lardy sets. I had a few of those. Great grab and go sets for playing in the park.

Really nice review, thank you Powderdigit. I’ve just ordered my Dubrovnik (Mahogany stained, weighted version) from RCM and looking forward to it!

What you did is more than a review, you gave a complete insight. It was a real happiness and my reason for ordering these chessmen.

Another point is that I was in Dubrovnik 15 years ago and didn’t do any chess shopping then. That’s a late present for myself from Dubrovnik, the way I see it. Knights are really original, but what strikes me are the renewed (larger) rooks. They are my favorite pieces in this set. Can’t wait to hold and analyze games with them! I’ll keep updates.

Thanks everyone, I am happy that people continue to find this thread helpful. The main reason I joined this forum and community was to provide objective, helpful feedback … as - back in COVID times - I found this community valuable when I purchased my first set….

Of course, things got slightly out of control after purchasing that first set some years back…here’s the story if you have time to spare 😆😆The Five Knights of Lockdown

I love my Dubrovnik set. It’s gorgeous, and feels so nice when I play it. Again, like many others, I purchased it after reading Powderdigit’s review. Very helpful for me.

Dubrovnik is, indeed, a beautiful set to admire, keep, and play with. Loved to see so many chess lovers talking about it.

crusaderwabbet

Power, Now you have done it. I have been looking at Dubrovnik sets. I like the 50s reproduction style Just like yours. They just have a certain classic look.

Hi all, just a quick note and update.
Recently, I noticed a fine crack in the base of one of my queens in this set. I was surprised as I have numerous sets that I have purchased from various suppliers out of India and this is the first time that I have noted a crack appear over time. I store my sets where there is little temperature or humidity variation, hence my surprise.

Anyway, a tip of the hat to the team at Royal Chess Mall. I sent a photo and they sent me another queen via mail with no fuss and indeed and apology for the fact that a piece had cracked. Wonderful that they backed up their gurantee so effortlessly. Thank you RCM. 👍

Many of these cracks are hairline and cannot be noticed without the help of magnifying glass. From my experience cracks happen 90% of the times because of the metal weights inside the chess pieces specially when the wooden has not been seasoned and processed scientifically. Many times I found hairline cracks in the sets I had bought from India and they always sent the replacement thanks to Paypal. Hairline cracks are most common among Indian ebony wood (madagascar ebony is much better) and sometimes Padauk. Shessham and rosewood crack less often and boxwood rarely cracks.
