The factory which made these was called ˝Treska˝,they mostly produced furniture so they did not have that much experience with chess sets. Most of the pawns have different sized collars and width of bases is different too in Skoplje set on some pieces, the same thing is with the bishops. That is because they were in time crunch, they got the plans for the set couple of weeks before the Olympiad started, the another thing is that they did not care that much about details(same with of bases, cuts in queen's crown and some other things),you can the same thing in Dubrovnik 1950 Olympiad chess set.The queen of the set that I have seen had 10 cuts in it's crown and on dark side is has 12 cuts,I have seen one original Dubrovnik 1950 set and the kings had bases of different sizes. There is a lot of examples of different sizes between the same pieces on Yugoslav sets.
1972 Skopje Yugoslavia Olympiad Chess Set How about a replica?
I need to dispose of an original 1972 chess Olympiad table and may have the set that goes with it I am UK based ( South Wales) and need it and other memorabilia, books and sets to go to a good home.
Advise please

Here's a link to the YouTube video on the 1972 Skopje Olympiad. I'm still looking for clear-close-up pictures of these Olympiad pieces so that a replica could be made. Any help would be appreciated.

Reducing the size of the pawns to satisfy our Western tastes would do violence to one of the key design elements of this socialist set. The size of the pawns reflects the importance of the proletarians. It's a design element seen in a lot of sets designed in what then were communist countries.
I'm with you there Chuck. Philodor would be proud

Neither Browne nor Ivkov are sitting in front of a Skopje 1972 set. If I were to hazard a guess both photos were taken at the Wijk aan Zee tournament.

Don't tease the nice people Mike
OK Ron I'll try not to. I will post more pics of this rare set since a few sets have surfaced on the internet

@ GNM: Now where can I find a board like that? I love the authentic, faded look of that board, but boy they seem hard to find. Granted, I've only looked on ebay, but still. I think boards like that have the most "character", for lack of a better word.

Sorry Maik, This is an internet photo. I 'd like to find that board too.
For some reason I can't download the pictures that are available that you provided so I can't say for sure but the bishops are some kind of Staunton bishops with Dubrovnik style opposite colored hats, there are same to me,can you point out the difference.
