2nd Book to read after Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess?

Novice player, yes I’m a ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ Beth Harmon-inite (not sure what the chess community calls us...Anya Taylor-Joy’s Chess Children?) anyway, I finished BF Teaches [Checkmates], good book, but lets be real I’ve never gotten that far in my games to get a back-rank check mate. I liked the format and the explanations, with that, what book would you recommend for my 2nd book? More of a focus on the earlier phases of the game maybe a deep dive into a few openings? Or middle game? Or tactics? I don’t know what next.

If you never get to back rank mates... you need true beginner stuff.

Id get:

"Play Winning Chess" by Yasser Seirawan

this is probably available at your local library

and / or

"The Soviet Chess Primer"

I'm in the same boat.  RussBell's recent blog mentions Bobby Fischer's book and books to read after it plus dozens of others including the two BattleDuck suggested.

Bobby Fischer quits chess and goes crazy

I know it sounds bad, not meant to be an insult, but an honest suggestion.
Read "Chess for Dummies" by James Eade.
It’s a good introduction to some positional stuff, like doubled and isolated pawns, good and bad bishops etc.

An excellent book with an unfortunate title

I think complete game books are best for beginners. You get some insight into many different things, but nothing too deep with either of the Chernov books: Most Instructive Games and or Logical Chess.

Best book in my opinion would be

Polgar 5334  book.

All you need to do is woodpeckers method on mate in 1 puzzles in this book for now, which will improve your vision, geometry of the board, pattern recognition, and overall improve your game play
