Figured someone would have identified it already! (thats me trying to get more people to help lol)
Aficionados, need some help identifying this oddball...

No idea, but it is a fascinating set. I like it.
Yeah, the knights caused me to buy it, never seen decent one carved that small. Carving bone is a PIA (tried it once, carving stone seems easier). The poor guy got tired I think, if you look close you can tell the bone pieces are just a bit thicker that their opposites. It especially shows in the rooks.

So it arrived to today, mightily impressed. Some of the smallest pieces I have ever seen. All are fully carved, including the knight, with distinct ears, a cut in mane, and lower lip lol. Thats all while being 1 cm tall! I do believe is a recent item, if anyone knows where from let me know...

It is a set from the 80's or 90's from a company called BK in India. I recognize the pieces and the way they are stored.

Thank You so much! I have a good number of peg sets, soviet, old english german, etc. and this instantly became my favorite! I was guessing India or Pakistan (on close inspection the hinges were handmade). How they carved that knight Ill never figure out, Again thank you very much!

I like everything except those white painted circles. Too distracting for me.
Honestly it would be impractical for play in any sense (pieces are way too small, thats a 4" board and they are swallowed by it) but Im a sucker for unusual or well made chess items. If you actually going to use a traveling set, the soviet peg ones that close completely are nice (HOS has some of the same design). The wallet designs are good also.
I like peg travel sets (specific enough eh?) and have quite a few. Today purchased this off of fleabay (mainly for the pieces). I would think this was a one off home job, but its a bit too well done, and most importantly whats driving me crazy is that I vaguely think I have seen others like it. Its a weirdo.
So just going from the pictures (ignoring the sales pitch description that was given with it).
The pieces are bone and probably ebony or horn, maybe some dyed wood. The board itself is solid, not hollow when closed, except for the inlay work. The pieces are stored in tubes drilled into the side, with offset gates closing them. Slide the gates, and you can get the pieces out. The hinges look odd, the thickness of the metal seems to vary a bit. The latches just appear to be cheap trinket box latches.
Where its from? No idea, other than to say doesnt look western European or american to me. The wood strikes me as a tropical hardwood. Here are the pics, any insight would be appreciated. Or you may be like me and be like wth its probably Indian, Polish, Ukrainian, Polynesian, Filipino...
