You're not aloud to use computer programs for games in progress. But for games already done you can get a mobile version of Shredder
Analyse games on iPad/iPhone
Thanks for your response.
I know I can't use a computer program to analyse the game (i.e., have the computer suggest a move or give an assessment of the position), but I don't think there's any rule against using a computer to record lines I've analysed myself. If I'm wrong here, someone please correct me.
I'm basically looking for a technological implementation of writing down all the different lines I've looked at on a piece of paper.
Maybe a better title for this thread would have been "Analyse games by hand on iPad/iPhone".
Actually, does Shredder do what I want (i.e., let me enter different lines that I'm considering)? And can I turn the engine off? This isn't clear from the app description. If it does do this it could be just what I'm looking for.
Thanks

yes shredders does this. Not sure if shredder has a lite version for ipad, they do for iphone. The problem with shredder is they make 1 app for iphone and 1 app for ipad. meaning if you use the iphone app on ipad and magnefy it , it will be blurry. Checkout stockfish, its free, universal app (looks great on both devices), does what your looking for.

Hi, thanks for your response. I just checked and I had already installed Stockfish to try it out, and it doesn't do what I want: when I'm playing through a game and go back a few moves and enter a new move, it doesn't add a new variation but just deletes the old moves. I'll edit my first post now to make it clear what I'm looking for - I think at least two people have misunderstood me so perhaps I was too wordy. If there is a way to to this in Stockfish and I just didn't see it, please let me know.
In light of this clarification, could you or someone else let me know if Shredder lets me enter games with different variations (and, ideally, save them too)? If it does, I'm more than happy to buy it, but from the description I suspect it doesn't.

Shredder for iphone does not let you enter variations. I don't know any app that does that, but I'm also very interested in such an app.

stwils: I'm not sure if I understand what you're after, but it sounds to me that Shredder will let you do this (via the Enter moves option). It won't let you enter variations, and I don't know of any ipad/iphone app that does that.

Hi all
Still nothing changed? Kinda droidfish for android to analyze and insert variations suggested by the engine or one mind?
Thanks
Edit:
I'm looking for a chess app on the iPad which lets me:
e.g., CBase Chess supports multiple variations, and most chess games with a 2-player mode let you enter your own moves, but I can't find a program with both! Ideally I could save different games too, but even this isn't essential.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all,
I'm looking for an app for my iPad which will let me analyse games I'm playing in correspondence chess. So basically I need to be able to enter different lines in the game I'm playing, and for the app to have no engine, or at least an option to turn the engine off so I don't accidentally cheat.
I know there are a few PGN readers on the app store but I can't see any that let me enter new games. I'm happy to pay for an app if I know it does what I want. Options to add comments and to save games would be useful but neither is essential - I'd just like to record the analysis I've done already so I don't keep going over the same lines.
Any advice? Also if there's a (free) Windows program that does the same thing I'd be interested, but I'd really like something on the iPad. It seems crazy I can't find this - either I'm being dense or there's a big gap in the market here!
Thanks
