Any good books on the sicilian?

Are there any good books out there on the sicilian that go through the concepts and themes of the main variations that isn't an encyclopedia of theory?

kco

Well I am not sure of this one for you, ''The Sicilian for the Tournament player''
Eduard Gufeld, Batsford. Is good got a bit everything in it.

Not being rude to ericmittens and kco but I wouldnt agree with their recommendations. I think you will just waste your money because they are not really a specialized opening repertoire, as it covers the whole Sicilian variations and can only scrutinize to a certain introductory level.

What I recommend?

First, know what sort of position you would like to play. This will depend on your style of play.

Second, know your available time to spend on studying the pertinent opening theory.

If you have plenty of time for opening study and can keep up with the latest theory, I suggest you play the Sicilian Najdorf. It can be played both agrresively and positionally. There are numerous good books about the variation like The Sharpest Sicilian and Mastering the Najdorf by Moreno.

Alternatives for an aggressive play is the Sicilian Pelikan or the Sveshnikov Variation. Cant recommend a book for this one because I havent played this opening.

Also for ultra sharp and tactical play I recommend the Sicilian Dragon. There are 2 books I can recommend : Winning with the Sicilian Dragon 2 by Ward, and Play the Sicilian Dragon by some author I heard who's good.

For positional play. Play the Sicilian Kan or Sicilian Taimanov or even the Accelerated Dragon. Books include The Safest Sicilian by Delchev (Taimanov) and The Accelerated Dragon by (I forgot their names, sorry)

I hope this helps.

Isn't that exactly what he was asking for? What's the point in buying specialized repertoire books when you dont know what variation you want to play?

A good book is Experts vs the sicilian which is quite up to date. but if you want to go with some off beat but still extremely playable is John nunn's beating the sicilian which covers an f4 variation of the Najdorf very informative.

I have more books on the sicilian defense than any other opening,  there are too many to choose from but if you havent decided which sicilian you will play (there are many to choose from) a good book to start with is : The Sicilian Defense by Gufeld. I believe someone already plugged this book , if so I agree with them.

experts vs. the sicilian is awesome!

But extremely theoretical...

bondiggity, there are fine suggestions above but you should decide which book is best for your style of play, as has been noted. I suggest that you invest $2.99 in the Kindle book below and then decide which flavor or variation of Sicilian Defence suits you or is played by your favorite Grandmasters. Best!
