The Amateur's Mind, How to Reaccess Your Chess.

It is good to get books that teach you to understand chess, rather than some opening book.  How to Reassess your chess is broken down into ideas for each class level, that they should understand at their level.  It goes from beginner, on up.  Great materials.

if you want classics, look at Lasker's Manual of Chess or Capablanca's Chess Fundamentals
