Any recommendations for travel/magnetic set (wood pieces, 8-10 inches)

Sort:
marpole

I would be appreciative of recommendations from anyone who has purchased or used a travel/magnetic set, ideally with wood pieces, and ideally around 8-10 inches / 20-25 cm.

Thanks for any suggestions of appropriate sets, or conversely, sets to avoid.

I have both of these. I've mostly used the wooden one and I like it. It's smaller and perfect for flights, etc. The quality is decent enough but you should take the price into account, it won't be a work of art. I had two pieces with weak magnets, so I just put in strong magnets myself and the set's fine now. The Kidami is a nice set, but the squares are..rectangles, which is slightly weird but not as noticeable as one might think. You can read the reviews on Amazon. If you're looking to spend more all the big online chess stores have magnetic/travel sets and those should be higher quality. Good luck, let us know what you go with.

Feel free to disregard this post if you're only sets with the standing pieces and not magnetic sets with flat disk pieces:

Although not a wooden set, I can warmly recommend the ChessMate sets. It's one man setup, and genuine craftsmanship, not mass produced crap from some sweatshop. The owner, Dave Weinstock, is very meticulous and if you're prepared to fork out a few extra dollars, you get the Rolls-Royce of magnetic chess sets (by far the best I've ever seen or used). Several users here, apart from myself, have also spoken very highly of his sets (https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/chessmate-pockettravel-sets---excellent). I bought the ChessMate Ultimate model, and Dave very generously added a full(!) extra set of pieces, apart from the extra Q, R, B, and N for both colours (for pawn promotions) already included as standard.

I absolutely love this set:

At first I did not like the pieces but after using it for a number of games they have grown on me. Highly recommended.

I would also recommend ChessMate travel sets. A little pricey, but very good quality and service, as mentioned already.

I second this opinion.

I love my ChessMate set.  That said, I spent years playing with a generic magnetic wood folding set I bought at Strategy Games in Toronto and had no problem with it, as well.  I don't think they have a Vancouver store but you can order online from them.

That is a pretty sweet set.  If I ever need to get another portable set, I might have to give it a shot.

marpole: You didn't say how and when you plan to use it. When I have time and space (such as in a hotel room when playing a tournament), I use a small roll-up vinyl board and a set of unweighted wooden pieces. Very light, compact and portable, but not practical on a plane or a train, or in the waiting hall, i.e. someplace where I need to quickly and easily put the set away without disrupting the position. For those situations I use my flat disk magnetic chess set (ChessMate Ultimate folds with the position intact). The same goes for my chess reading material: a small book which easily stows together with the magnetic set.

Here's what looks like my set, which I like very much.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0758KQFXY

The foam storage layout looks different than mine (which has extra queens horizontally stored), but otherwise, it looks nearly the same.

My set is small but very playable (and I'm used to tournament-sized sets); we even have gotten a few complements from passerbys commenting on the cuteness of this set.

A good choice!

Plus Chess House and it's owner Raphael Neff are good people to deal with - reputable and will treat you right....

I own a lot of travel sets in wood.  Currently, I carry a TravelMate Deluxe in my computer bag with me.  That set is great.

I went to their webpage and see that they now have a few different options in this area, specifically the TravelMate Basic and TravelMate Pro.  Both look good.  Here is the web page:  https://thinket.com/collections/chessmate-pocket-travel-chess-sets

Before Christmas I bought this set from The Chess House:  https://www.chesshouse.com/collections/travel-chess-sets/products/8-play-keeper-magnetic-chess-set

This set is the best one that I have found for keeping a position intact when moving the set around.  I use this set in an exam room for some offices I work at to use between seeing patients.  The board comes out of the box and the magnets are really strong.

I agree with BontheCat in you should look at how you plan on using the set.

This Drueke set is the absolute best if you want to have the ability to save games with 3D pieces:

I own 3 of them. The magnets are really strong and positions will stay intact even after severe shaking.

Another nice travel/analysis set from Chess House!

Everything you said about that set is true. It is one of my favorites and I own the old walnut case edition as well as the plastic case edition. I take the plastic case edition all over and it takes a beating. It's just a great set and even if you have a fancy one from ChessMate or someone else this is a must set. I took some gold nail polish fr the newer set and applied it to the bishops as the older sets used to have. Works great.

Eyechess

I also own a few of the Drueke magnetic sets described.

I'm sorry but I must disagree a bit that the set recently offered and I bought from The Chess House is a bit nicer than the Drueke plastic, magnetic set.

The problem with the Drueke set is the pieces are squat and stubby making it unlike the standard Staunton design sets we are accustomed to.

This set has pieces that are more of the staunton look.  Yes, the box is taller than the Drueke because of this, but it is still quite portable.

The magnets are really strong in this set as well so there is no concern of the pieces sliding around when the board is moved.

I also really like that the board can easily be removed from the box as a stand alone set on a table top.  OF course it also still works quite well while in the box.  The box is tall enough so the pieces can stand on the board when the box is closed.

I carried a Drueke set around when I would be somewhere that I could not have a table or counter top to put the set on.  This new set from The Chess House carries and is equally good for portable use as the Drueke.  Of course the ChessMate set and others are fine when there is a table or counter top.

I agree with Eyechess' comments about the Drueke magnetic set.  I bought this set years ago, but never used it because I don't care for the "squat", funky looking pieces, which in my view are just plain ugly.

In fact I eventually stumbled upon an inexpensive toy chess set (in the toys section of a drug store) whose plastic magnetic pieces were perfectly sized for the Drueke set's board (which itself is nice).  So I replaced the Drueke pieces, and now use the Drueke board with the toy set's pieces.  The combination works very well.

@RussBell, If you aren't using the Druke pieces and have not thrown them out I wouldn't mind having them, send me a message please,
