any reviews of kramnik chess set

I'm in the market for a wooden chess set - I really like the look of this Kramnik gift box.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with this set? I'm especially interested in how heavy the pieces are.  Or - if anyone knows of a comparable set, I'd be interested in seeing it.  Thanks!

· The DGT Easy Plus chess clock (with bonus & delay options)
· A foldable inlaid wooden board (walnut/maple 50*50 mm squares)
· A wooden weighted chess set, model "Timeless" (king height 88 mm)
· A CD with 100 selected games by Vladimir Kramnik

The board and pieces are a little undersized compared to the tournament standard, but apart from this and unstated details (piece weighting, for example), it doesn't look like a bad package.

Also, two-piece boards that are not well made can be very irritating when they don't match up at the center or are gappy. This kind of precision can be easily forgone as a cost saving measure. It's an unknown here.

Have you shopped around for other pieces and boards.

Good point on two-piece boards that might be gappy. The description claims, "...with a reverse fold so that when opened, the fold is virtually seamless." I can't really tell from the photo if this is the case.

I have done a bit of comparison shopping - the main competition for this set would be a veneer folding wood board from House of Staunton, combined with a set of wood pieces - something like these, which seem nicely weighted (74g king). Total outlay for this combo would be around $125, and wouldn't include a clock.

I don't really like most of the other folding sets I've seen - many of them either include hollowed out inserts for the pieces to snap into (which I don't want), or don't seem to have heavy enough pieces.

Just to provide a conclusion to this thread - I just got the kramnik set in the mail today.

It's quite nice - the pieces have a good weight to them, and are also nicely finished for the price point - sanded and very slightly polished. The board looks great - and the fold is very unobtrusive.

I don't think I would want to pay full price for this combo ($160), but at the current price ($99), I think it's a great deal for anyone who needs a clock, board, and pieces.

Looks like a neat set.

I'm glad the set worked out.

How's the clock?

Thanks goldendog and N2UHC. The clock seems to be a good one. The levers feel responsive, and the controls are straightforward. I like that the display is angled and that it supports Fischer time control.

Considering DGT makes the boards used at many tournaments, I'm surprised they haven't tried something like the Kramnik set with other players (ie, Anand). I wonder if the sales were disappointing.

You probably don't want to see this, but look at today's "Thursday Deal" from Wholesale Chess:

You're right, Herzog - I didn't want to see that.  :-)   They must really be trying to get rid of them.

The clock is flimsy and easily broken.

The pieces are smaller than std tournament fare but nicely weighted.  I love the board, the back is comletely felted and it has the rank n files ethched in.

I personally don't care about a chess clock, because when I play OTB I don't like time controls.  But then I usually just play friendly games and am still at the point where I need to study the board for a while before making a move.

But that set & board look pretty nice, something that would work well for friendly games.

This is a very good set. I love the board. Pieces are not the best, but still good for sure!
