Are Travel Sets Worth the Money

All the travel sets that I can find look quite expensive considering the lack of detail and size of the pieces which don’t seem they would be conducive an enjoyable chess experience. What are your experiences with travel sets and are they worth the money?

I used to use an 8inch board but it seemed too small. Now on the road I use standard pieces for which I bought a silicone chess board.

Most older chess players , have a travel chess set of some kind , A pocket size one is great to study with ie with a book etc when say on a bus / underground / or even a break at work , also great for a quick game . I guess most younger people just use a phone theses days .

For those of us that need a board and pieces to play a miniature chess set can be invaluable.

My 7-inch magnetic travel set enables me to play almost anywhere.

I just bought a 15" magnetic set with wood pieces on Temu for under $30. It looks very much like the chess set in the center on DesperateKingWalk's post above. I will post a review when I receive it.
It was decent, but the pieces weren't magnetic as I had hoped so I returned it. This was my fault as there are other similar sets on Temu that do have magnetic pieces.

I owen a very pleasant 10" magnetic travel set from House of Chess ("Pleasant Times"). Very decent quality:

Comes with an extra set of different knights, extra queens, and an extra pawn each. Well worth the around US$80 I paid (Etsy).

My travel set costs 6.95$. It is light plastic with a small vinyl board. For me it is perfect as what I want is small, light, 2.5"king and cheap enough so if it's lost travelling I wont be sad.

This, perfectly serviceable, plastic magnetic travel set did set me back the equivalent of 12 USD. The board measures 31x31 cm unfolded (roughly 12 by 12 inches).

Bought one of those a while ago too because of the weight, they're being sold by several different companies in two different sizes (got the 12" version, too). Decent magnetism, board is okay, storing the pieces requires a bit of patience (includes checkers chips, too).

I wouldn't wanna play on any board with less than 10" and smaller than 2.5" king size pieces. happy.png

I just bought this 12" set on etsy on Thu night, but it hasn't shipped yet : ( Looks pretty great for around $60.

Looks nice and good value. It seems though that this shop isn't offering extra queens with ANY of their chess sets, even the most expensive ones.
