Given the current conversations, it would be interesting to see which of the current lineup of smart boards (Certabo, SquareOff, Millennium and DGT) this newest version of Arena Chess actually supports (via the menu system).

I can’t remember how to install Linux to a thumb drive with persistence and set it as bootable. I’ll have to look it up. It is a great feature as you can use it in any computer that boots from USB.

I don't have any smart board to try it out. I'm just happy it's finally on Linux happy.png . Linux user since 2012. Won't touch Windows or Mac with a ten-foot pole happy.png

I thought it was on Linux before it was on Windows - like Open Office?

I like Linux because you can run it off a thumb drive or memory card - don't have to install it on the Hard Drive.  That is good for fault testing a computer that won't boot properly or using a non-persistent install on a thumb drive to browse the internet on a friend's computer.

Last time I used Linux was Ubuntu 4 so quite a while ago.

Not to my knowledge. It's been a Windows only program for a long time.

Ho yes, I see now. Arena Chess came to Linux in 2016.

Now that I do not use my computer for gaming, I should get Linux back onto the computer - even as a dual boot.

Hello!

I am using Arena Chess 3.5.1 and wondering how to manually enter variation lines. While attempting to recreate games in books, the author(s) invariably offer alternate "scenarios" and I would like these to be included in the created .PGN file(s). Any suggestions or places to look for answers?

Thanx!

I suggest you use SCID or SCID VS PC. I find Arena to be complicated and unintuitive.

I can't get Arena to run in Linux. When I click on the executable "Arena_X86_64_Linux" it takes me to my browser. Do I need to add an extension to the file to run it? One guy mentioned that he ran it from a flash drive, but I think that it would avail the same result. Thanks guys for any help.

Did you check the permissions of the file to ensure that it's an executable?

PoisonQ

I wasn't aware that I had to add permissions. Please explain how I go about doing that, or perhaps point me to a tutorial link. Thanks again.

Basically, you right-click on the file, click on "Properties", then "Permissions". You'll see a line saying "Execute    Allow executing file as program." If that box isn't enabled, then enable it. That's about it.
