Around the World Chess Set Challenge

Sort:
flantastico

Let's get a collection of chess sets from around the world together. So many countries have had unique takes on the staunton (and non-staunton!) design. Post a picture of one of your chess sets and ID which country it came from. Personally, I'd be more interested to see originals than reproductions...
Countries represented so far:

  • Germany
  • Slovenia
  • USA
  • France
  • Hungary
  • Colombia
  • Israel
  • Soviet Union / Russia
  • Mexico

Let's see how many countries we can represent!

I'll start. Here's a 3.5" weighted, felted vintage Bayerwald from Germany (pictured on 2" square Drueke board).

Not a very good image (I don't own this, got it from RCMP site) - RCMP chess set . . .

That's great Rum - I actually have the same set with 3.75" kings minus the nice case. Beautiful pieces.

So that's France and Germany (and something Canada themed, though it wasn't really in the spirit of what I was after. I want to see if we can put together a gallery that demonstrates each culture's interpretation and impact on chess piece design. For example, in my German set, those bishops are uniquely German in style, as are the knights, though the knights do reflect influence of the simpler style French Staunton sets imho. Rum's set has the iconic lardy knights, for sure.)

Please keep sharing!

Very nice flan. ignore conners. I agree, repros are so common.

Here is a 60-70's French Lardy top of their line Glass Eyed Palisander and olive wood 3.75k .

"ignore conners"? What brought that on? Wasn't the post about chess sets from around the world? What could be more uniquely Canadian than a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) chess set? While Canadian craftsmen have produced "typical" Staunton designs and various other unique sets, the RCMP set is distinctly Canadian.

The chess set is comprised of figurines hand painted to resemble either the official North West Mounted Police (forerunners of the RCMP) or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (today's force). The uniforms and weaponry of each figurine are accurate representations of the real apparel that were, or are now, worn by their respective rank.

Sorry, but I stand by my Canadian choice. happy.png

Sorry .I thought you were being sarcastic in posting that set. I redacted it.

Thank you. It can be difficult interpreting language without any auditory cues, and I can be sarcastic at times with some of my postings. But this time I really thought this was a very unique Canadian set. Perhaps a bit "cheesy", but distinctly Canadian.

I bought these at the Hungarian Chess Federation when I was in Budapest a couple years ago. They are plastic and famous for being used at the public baths.

Wow, chessauthor! Those are cool. I love the styling and have never seen anything like it! I expeically love the king's crosses... they look more like something you'd tie your horse to than a cross. The swapped bishop colors, and the funky knights are awesome.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi! I haven't posted anything for a while. Well, here is a Mexican Staunton, probably made of pine wood..

That Mexican Staunton looks gorgeous. It has traces of Drueke Player's Choice with a knight from perhaps a Reykjavik set. Thanks for sharing.

It really is beautiful! So far we've hit:

  • France
  • Canada-themed happy.png
  • Mexico
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Hungary

Can't wait to see where we go next!

Here's one from Colombia.

while i appreciate the bond clip, i think you misunderstand the point. also, please don't tell me what to do happy.png

Look through the thread. Folks have posted sets from Germany, France, Mexico, Hungary, Slovenia (which is technically a repro of the dubrovnik design but still). My hope was to get a gallery of staunton chessmen from around the world since each country has had its own unique influence. Lardy (from France) only looks like Lardy. Pinney sets only looks like Pinney. Spanish tournament sets (Escardibul, Mora viraf) only look like Spanish sets.

Or you can go buy a modern reproduction of those styles. I simply meant that I'd love to see original productions of those styles - if one wanted to see repros they could just visit the chess bazaar website. original pieces are far more interesting to my eye anyway... the patina, battle scars, etc.

Beautiful set informatic! I, too, have a Horn set that I adore. The Horn McCrillis c-550 which is the 3.75" king version of your set. Such an unusual, stylish design with sturdy heavily weighted pieces. The light pieces are Tiger Maple and just gorgeous. Some pictures:

After many years of ownership it remains my most favorite set to play with.

The royalty is on the slimmer side, and I find it fits perfectly on 2" squares.
Here's the nice wooden box:

I learn something every day. Those Horn sets are nice. I like the use of maple, the slim cross and the symmetry progression from the pawn to the King. Are they weighted and what did they come in?

Updated my original post with some box pictures. The pieces are, imho, perfectly weighted, though I've never weighed them on a scale.

flantastico

Here's its little brother, the C-150 with 2.75" kings. Unweighted.

Now... what country is next? grin.png
