Best Chess GUI

I know that this thread has been before, but those answers didn't satisfy me, so here is a new one.

I want a chess GUI with at least the following functions:-

  1. Must be free(or at least for personal use, or something which has very less security easy to break Laughing)
  2. Support for all UCI engines(I have no problem if it supports XBoard as well)
  3. Must be able to read all PGN files rightly
  4. Should have a feature to rate players of a game according to the PGN(like ELOstat in Arena)
  5. Should show that which side is ahead in position, material and overall(2 of them can suffice, I can calculate 3rd myself)(eg. Shredder Android has an overall meter and shows taken and lost material and calculates it after every move)
  6. Should be able to show stats of any move in comparison of best move and in comparison to effect of its moves(eg.1.a4 b5 is a pawn down by effects, while in comparison to ...e5, it is worse)
  7. Should show comments in user friendly way obtained from last mentioned function(eg.It gains 3 points[overall], but is 4 points worse than my suggestion .......) or something easy to understand.
  8. Must be able to add annotations and variations(and signs like !!, ?? etc.) with a kibitzer-like feature.
  9. Can be used to play chess(No problem if no variants)
  10. Should be able to add multiple games in a PGN

It would also be good if it can open various formats(eg. *.si4(SCID Database),*.zsf(Zillions saved file) etc.) and can be used for engine tournament sort of thing

It is notable that Arena has all features except 3,6(half, but it is not easy to understand),7 and SCID lacks 4,6,7,8. Tarrasch is easy to use but it lacks 4-7,10, with ability to setup positions also.

Lucas Chess only doesn't do #4, but EloStat is usable outside of arena, so no real use for it anyway.

Oh, only really supports PGN and its own formats, but that's not too big a deal, either, really.

Also, SCID and SCID vs. PC both do #8 with the comment editor.

If you want something that supports pgn, scid, and chessbase formats all in one program, check out scidb (still in development).

ChessX or SCID vs PC will be your best bet, I'm using ChessX at the moment and loving it (despite having Deep Fritz 14 as well).

You lost me at #1 where you suggest breaking secruity. That's stealing.

I was just joking. There was even a smiley to symbolise the joke.

One day I will make the digital world free, but currently I can't purchase any digital comodity or service.

SCID considers PGNs as read-only files, so though it does #8, it can't save them directly as PGN, and with multiple files in its raw format, I would not like it. But still it is good with most features one can expect.

SCIDB(in development, as you said) is not much needed. PGN is a universal format and there is not much need to open other formats. I actually meant formats which programs don't support PGNs properly. I don't think that I will use chessbase formats, and SCID is easy to use but one will have many files if he wants PGNs. Okay, what I've written is confusing, even for me, so let me summarise this paragraph: SCID is full of features but due to not editing pgn files, and multiple files for a single pgn in its raw format, all needed, it is not a handy tool for editing. SCIDB is based on it so it would also be painful in it to edit pgns.

It would be good if it supports Linux as well. I can any time change my OS and if it supports Linux(RPM-based) then it would be good, though it can run on wine, VMPlayer, vbox or anything like that.

SCIDvsPC, at least, edits and saves to PGN just fine.  Use Tools - Export Current Game or Export Filter Games to PGN.  I don't use vanilla SCID, so I can't swear it does this, too, but I'd be surprised if it doesn't.

We can export it, but not edit it. It does have very good analysis tools but if it does not edit and can only open, change and export a new file, it'd be painful to use it for editing

If you love ChessX, which is not at all user-friendly, then the better organised and friendly program which I use, Chess Hero, and SCID for viewing, will enchant you to a trance

SCIDvsPC has a Save PGN function, as well.  Just tested it, works as expected.

I'm going with Lucas.

And I tested many of the suggestions too, but it is the best
