Best Chess Magazine(s)?

Folks,

I've got about £50 ($100 or €75) to spend on chess magazines per year to primarily keep up on what is going on in the chess world and review some of the latest GM and tornament games.  Which magazine or magazines do you recommend/rate?

billybob

Without a doubt one of the best New In Chess.

The British Chess Magazine is a comprehensive, long running publication (1881) and well worth the penny:

Is there a way to purchase the magazine without becoming a member of USCF? I don't really want a regular subscription at this point, just an odd issue every now and then.

personally i hadn't subscribed to magazines before this year when i got a subscription for Chess Life thinking there was the US Championship and the World Championship this year and that it would be worthwhile with two major events in mind ...

i cancelled my subscription recently when there was NO coverage of the events ... what chess magazine can call itself a chess magazine without any coverage of a world championship match?? and considering this is the US Chess Federation's magazine you'd think there would be a bit on the US Championship ... well, you'd be wrong ... nothing ... this was a waste of money in my book ... if i'm subscribing to a magazine about a subject i'd expect it to keep up on the big events in that subject area ... sports illustrated really focuses on the world series, the super bowl, etc, or i suspect they would have little to no subscription base ... yet the 'premier' US chess magazine from the nation's 'ruling body' doesn't have any real coverage of their own country's championship ... this was to say the least mind-boggling ...

i just subscribed to New In Chess seeing i could get their world championship wrapup issue as my first issue ...

anyone else find Chess Life's editorial choices rather baffling?

i can't recommend New In Chess since i haven't seen an issue yet but from the looks of it, it is covering the big events, the big matchups, and the big names in chess which is what i am looking for ...

I read "New in Chess" and "Chess", NIC is quite heavy in places but has excellent articles etc, plenty games as well, it is pretty expensive though.

"Chess" is by best buy as it is more suited to my grade, has all the latest news and games, plus graded puzzles, plus you get 10% off when buying from the London Chess Centre.

Good luck.

I like New in Chess new format with big photos, colour etc. And it is good that they have a lot of words and stories inside.
But when I want to read reviews with very good analysis and many articles on modern chess in openings, strategy, endgames and studies I like Chess Informant
So for most of people New in Chess is the best but if you are rated more than 2000 fide rating then you have to subscribe to Chess informant.

New in Chess is by far the best chess magazine.  It costs $89/year for about 8 issues.  Some people think $11/issue is excessive, but the great articles, elite tournament coverage, game analysis by super-GMs, beautiful photography, and high quality production make it well worth the price IMHO.

I would recommend New in Chess if you are mainly looking for news and entertainment, and Informant if you are looking for more serious material for improvement.

I have subscribed in the past to both and I prefer Informant, but YMMV.

New in Chess by far

I have subscribed to 'Chess' for a few years and can recommend. British Chess Magazine I subscribed to in the past but had problems with issues turning up very late or not at all!
