Best handheld chess computer

Which one is best, for a beginner/intermediate player?

The link here might help a little, but it talks more about portable solutions regardless of strength -- give it a look.

I've been running Chess Genius on my Blackjack II (Windows Mobile 6), and I've been very happy with it. I'm in the beginner/immediate range, so I don't know if a master-level player would like it; however, it's more than adequate for my needs.

I saw that thread, and I guess I was more curious about the existing dedicated handhelds (like the Excaliburs, the Saiteks, etc), vs buying a Palm (which I suppose I could find other uses for...)

I have a Radio Shack chess computer from several years back, but I'd rather have something smaller for tearing through some quick games or exercises (I've really been getting into exercises, lately) during my half-hour lunch.

I've seen some handhelds that come close to the Palm in price (the New York Times one, and a couple of Saiteks), so I would probably pay that much.

 Thanks

The NY22 pocket sized chess computer is about $30 on Amazon. I have one and I love it. It is easy to use and has a ton of features. It has a very nice padded carrying case and fits in my back pants pocket.Cool

I'm going to vote for saving your pennies and buying an iPod touch.  At $219 I know it's crazy expensive relative to a 30 dollar machine, but there's a tone of chess software available and Chess.com will be coming out with an iPod app.  Even without the iPod app, you can still use the touch's WiFi and browser to play on Chess.com and to browse the forums.

My top five uses of the my touch:

-- check email
-- to-do list (sync with Toodledo, free online task manager)
-- calendar (syncs with Google Calendar)
-- Chess.com (games and forums)
-- Pocket Shredder
-- Music (couldn't leave this off).

There are already 30 or so chess apps available for the touch/iPhone.

Just my two cents.

An inexpensive pocket pc used or refurbished such as an axim x5 probably under 100 bucks then fritz pocket pc which is expensive around 50.00 would provide a high quality experience.

I can't seem to find that on amazon. I can only find it from other sellers at $70-80. Could you give me the URL of the amazon page that sells it? I am interested in it, as you say it is relatively cheap, and it seems to be the only portable chess player in which the chess pieces actually look like chess pieces, not like some crazy random figure so you have to completely re-memorize what the chess pieces look like.

Do you realize that post is from 14 years ago? My guess is that the unit isn't even being made any more. Smart phone apps have just about killed the handheld chess game market.

Sure, you can use smart phones, but that is more expensive. Most, handheld chess like the Excalibur aren't being made anymore, but some are, and it's cheaper for someone who doesn't have a phone. You're right about this forum being old though. I should get information from a different source. Nonetheless, thank you for responding so quickly.

(Also, this quote thing is getting out of control LOL)

Don't assume that I'm a fan of smart phones. :-) I don't like them. I'd prefer to be able to roll back the clock a decade or two (or three or four), but I suspect that's not much of an option. If you really want that unit, I suspect you'll have to scrounge eBay for a used unit that someone is selling. Good luck with the hunt!

Edit - Eh, it must be a scarce item. I just looked through all of the electronic chess items on eBay, and I didn't see a single listing for that model.

@EscherehcsE

I'm not saying you like smart phones. By "you" I meant "anyone". Also, you're more correct then not about them not really being made anymore. You can find other options, and you can find the Excalibur (NY22) from certain re-sellers (not eBay, though), but for a price ranging from $80-$270!!!
