Will be glad to hear your opinion on this one

Duvupov

Very nice! But is it in the same price range?

Retromaximum

It varies depending on either it is made to order or ready to buy. Made really close to original chess set that I posses.

Duvupov

Very impressive. Going to think about it. You are RetroMaximum on Etsy? Your chess.com says you are from Ukraine, but on Etsy it says ship from the US? How does it work with shipping/customs to EU?

Retromaximum

Almost any EU country on request. Most of the EU countries tax or duties included.

Also use FBM prep center in USA to ensure fast delivery to American clients.

This set might get more interest due to Netflix's series The Queen's Gambit. I believe that this is the same set used in the last episode. However this might not be the same set as used in the mini series. Just remembered that the Rooks in the episode had no cuts on the turret. So it could be another Soviet era set used.

Loving the fact that there’s a new chess-related show.

I found that show a few days ago....Absolutely fantastic and not only for the chess, but the human interest stories too!

KnightsForkCafe

I enjoyed the show. However the sets they used seemed out of place for the time period. This was my only gripe about the show. When you can get the beer cans right for the time period but not the sets. It seemed a bit lazy on their part not to get time period sets.

KnightsForkCafe

Nice!

KnightsFork: the show managed to get right other things that non-chess players pay close attention to: fashion, cars, furniture, cost of living, home equity values.

Wonder why the red vs black colors aren't more common amongst the repros

Because original chess set never looked like this. It is more red-brownish than just red.

Durupov: I personally am not inclined to use dark and darker pieces when playing. I wouldn't have any issues if the set was just for show/display.

Wasn't this Latvian style chess set the same style of chess set used in the final tournament in Netflix' "Queen's Gambit" show?

Knights from original Latvian set are much more beautiful than those from show. Set used in show is a later version of Latvian set simplified for mass market production. Some pieces remained the same, some were simplified significantly and almost lost its charm.

What I can’t figure out is why anyone would want a reproduction when there are thousands of the originals still around. I bought this from CB a couple of years ago when it first came out, but the originals are nice, and cheaper than the repros for the most part.

I live in Ukraine that is exUSSR country and it is really hard to find this set in decent condition. Those chess pieces are slim and break easily and very few survived. Besides that original set weighs only about 300 grams, it is not weighted and thus not so pleasurable to play with as weighted reproductions. But after all this is only my subjective opinion.

That's my point. If you can manage to get the big stuff correct. Why not get the finer details correct as well. There are so many reproductions of set from the 40's, 50's, and 60's that they could have used instead of today's sets. At least use to repros of the time period to be a bit more authentic.
