ChessX works on Windows, Mac and Linux.
Regarding your comment about chess.com's Analysis Board Editor, it shouldn't matter whether you run Windows, Mac or Linux since chess.com runs within a web browser, not as a program installed on the machine.
To experiment whether a downgraded membership will work for you, log out of chess.com then visit the link above. This will give you the experience of what a non-member is able to do.
what is the best PGN editing software that allows you to enter moves from a chessboard , play through them , add variations , export edited files , etc ?
honestly those available here using analysis board (at least for premium members) are the best I've seen but I don't have Windows so I could easily be missing out ...
if I downgraded to Gold or Platinum would I still be able to edit PGN files the same way as Diamond members can ?
