what is the best PGN editing software that allows you to enter moves from a chessboard , play through them , add variations , export edited files , etc ?

honestly those available here using analysis board  (at least for premium members) are the best I've seen but I don't have Windows so I could easily be missing out ...

if I downgraded to Gold or Platinum would I still be able to edit PGN files the same way as Diamond members can ?

SCID vs PC works on Windows and Mac.
ChessX works on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Regarding your comment about chess.com's Analysis Board Editor, it shouldn't matter whether you run Windows, Mac or Linux since chess.com runs within a web browser, not as a program installed on the machine.

To experiment whether a downgraded membership will work for you, log out of chess.com then visit the link above. This will give you the experience of what a non-member is able to do.

didn't know ChessX could do that , will have another look .  I have Scid vs PC with a few million games in a database (which is awesome for studying openings IMO) but had trouble wrangling PGN variations - most likely user error !  meh.png

thanks for replying

Here are a couple of resources to help master SCID vs PC:

  1. Tutorial on chess.com by @SamCopeland
  2. Intro by BetterChessTraining

Good luck!

Do I have to be a paying member to use pgn editor on my home site now? Several years ago I used it, and then it was free.
